Pet Care

When it comes to having pets, the love you take will be the love you make, because the more you give, the more you will get.  The other day I mentioned to Paula that a goldfish would be much easier to take care of than a kitten and she replied, “Kittens are more fun than fish”, which is true because the only thing you can do with a goldfish is to feed it.  A healthy goldfish can live up to 20 years if it is cared for properly.  A goldfish can be an excellent starter pet, especially if you live in a place that does not allow cats and dogs.  They are fairly easy to maintain, but you need to check on the water to make sure it is sanitary.  Every 1-2 weeks you will need to clean their tank with a gravel vacuum to clean up the wasted food, fish poop, and other substrate that ends up on the bottom.

Compared to dogs, cats are a low maintenance pet.  They don’t require formal training, they don’t need to be taken out multiple times a day, and they’re even able to take care of basic self-cleaning, going to great lengths to keep themselves clean.  Sometimes things could get messy at the backend and wipe their bottom for them if they don’t try to bite or scratch you.  Cats are tidier, they are more independent, and they can even be more affectionate than dogs, as they love to cuddle.  They will snuggle for safety and protection.  Seeking warmth is rooted in their behavior, as when they are young kittens, they all sleep together in a bundle to keep warm and safe.  Many adult cats will continue to crave this later in life also.  Cats don’t bark and they don’t take up much space, but they do like to climb on everything.  If you decide that a cat is the pet for you, then you will need a litterbox, a food bowl, a water bowl and some toys for them to play with so they don’t destroy your stuff.  Most cats will sleep anywhere from 12-16 hours, and kittens will sleep 18-20 hours daily.  Cats will sleep more during the day so they are ready to begin their hunt at night.  Their instinct tells them to be active when their prey is, so if a mouse or a lizard gets into your house at night, there is a good chance that your cat will find it.  You can leave your cat alone for several days as they are very independent creatures and they don’t suffer from separation anxiety.  Every cat is an individual, but most of them like to hide and this makes people see them as being aloof and stoic instead of being social.

Dogs are expressive they have big personalities and are easy to read.  When they don’t feel well or get hurt, you will know it.  They’re kind of like children and usually express their pain, stress and other emotions well.  Dogs have been man’s best friend for at least the past 15,000 years, and this symbiotic relationship is beneficial for both.  By adopting a dog, you will have another member in your family, and this can reduce the risk of schizophrenia, and improve your cardiovascular health, because it guarantees you exercise.  Dogs love to go for walks and they also enjoy going out for a ride in your car.  Dogs will probably eat anything that you serve them, just put the food in their bowl and watch them eat it and be grateful.  Their positive attitude is infectious, as they get excited over the simplest things like seeing a stick, chasing a ball, and this can make you appreciate the little things in life.  No one can be sad with a waggy-tailed friend around.  These four-footed canine best friends provide unconditional love and support and just looking at their big eyes and floppy ears makes it impossible for us not to love them.  They are incredibly loyal, and they will guard your home and help to keep it safe from invaders.

For Friday Faithfuls this week I would like you to tell me about your pets.  Share why you love them and tell some stories about the mischief that they get into.  This is a great opportunity for you to brag about your pets, tell us the story of how they got their name and please don’t forget to post some photos.

  1. Reblogged this on A Unique Title For Me and commented:

Jerry Seinfeld said, “On my block, a lot of people walk their dogs, and I always see them walking along with their little poop bags, which to me is just the lowest function of human life. If aliens are watching this through telescopes, they’re gonna think the dogs are the leaders. If you see two life forms, one of them is making a poop, the other one’s carrying it for him, who would you assume was in charge?”

  2. We just had one pet, my grandson’s cat. When my daughter moved to another city we made him an outdoor cat. Not he comes and goes as he likes. I guess we aren’t the real dedicated pet owners.
