Lucky Dip – Saturday Mix, 7 January 2023

Happy New Year MLMM family! It’s hard to believe it’s 2023, and this will be my 6th year (!!!!!) as the Saturday Mix Host. As such, I think it’s time to completely shake things up (who needs to wait for the 7-year itch, right!). So I am kicking off the new year with a NEW log and four completely NEW challenge prompts. I hope you enjoy them and would appreciate any feedback/suggestions you may have so that I can “tweak” any teething issues!

Here is the new schedule, with a brief explanation of each:

Week 1Lucky Dip (same name, new format).
For this challenge, I will be using “Rory’s Story Cubes” to generate 9 random “ideas” for inclusion in your response. I use story cubes with my students at school and just like the lucky dips from our childhood, you never know what you’re going to get! You need to use a minimum of 5 cubes, or for an extra challenge, try and use all 9. The cubes can be interpreted any way you like and for your response it is your choice to use poetry or prose.

Week 2Puzzle This
You will be given one piece of a puzzle. Use the picture parts you can see or clues contained within the puzzle piece as inspiration to craft your response. It is your choice to use poetry or prose.

Week 3No Nonsense
You will be given a nonsensical, made-up word. You will need to come up with your own definition and use the word in its invented context in your response. It is your choice to use poetry or prose.

Week 4Story Starter
You will be given a sentence to start your response. It is your choice to use poetry or prose.

This week, we are starting off with the Lucky Dip…

Welcome to the Saturday Mix – Lucky Dip, 7 January 2023!

lucky dip (noun). a game in which small objects are concealed in a container and chosen at random.

Your story cubes this week are:

Use these in your response, which may be either poetry or prose.

Good luck with your ‘Lucky Dip’ – I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Don’t forget to tag ‘Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie’, ‘Saturday Mix’, and hashtag #LuckyDip.

As always, make sure you link your fabulous creation to the helpful Mister Linky.

  1. I got confused earlier and thought Birdbrian, sorry I mean Bushboy was responsible for the challenge. Enthusiastically I told him that I used story cubes for my students (adult German as Second Language Learners, functionally illiterate), too. And then I quickly penned an answer, which I repeat here:

    I’m sitting in an airplane
    flying into a fake rainbow
    reading a book
    about chess wars in Surinam.
    The steward smiles when he
    hands me a drink but
    I don’t appreciate the interruption.
We land at four in the morning
    and I grab my cane
    doing a good impression of
Dr. House with my hurt knee
    hobbling towards the reception
committee (the ones who share my DNA)
holding out a single yellow flower.
