Oh! My Soul – Challenge #192

In a Song Lyric Sunday when the prompt of was Hop, Jump, Leap, Pounce, Spring, I wrote about the Screamin’ Rebel Angels’ song ‘Pounce Like a Tiger’, and I am back here today with another one of their songs which I really like.  ‘Oh! My Soul’ was released on their second album Heel Grinder which came out in 2019.  ‘Pounce Like a Tiger’ came out on an EP of the same name released in 2011 and their first album was Hitch Hike and that was released in 2013.  Laura Palmer is a fiery redhead from Brooklyn, NY who is the lead singer, guitarist, upright bassist and businesswoman that fronts the Screamin’ Rebel Angels.  This is Rockabilly at its best, loaded with energy and intensity, featuring primitive power that is pure rock ’n’ roll.

‘Oh! My Soul’ is the opening song on this Screamin’ Rebel Angels’ album Heel Grinder, and it kicks right into some high-octane 1950s Rock ‘n Roll infused with the soul of early Rhythm & Blues, which is louder, faster and harder than their previous music.  This music is completely wild and very intense, grinding deeper into their signature sound, a sound that manages to be both familiar and fresh.  ‘Oh! My Soul’ is a dance floor stomper that will raise the dead, soothe any ornery mood and enchant the pants off of anyone listening.  The irresistible rhythms can tame the raging beast down in your soul, because this beat is teeming with the energy and raw emotion that is derived from the very roots of rock ‘n roll invigorated with the raw power of punk to become Psychobilly music.

Laura Palmer sings lead vocals, and plays upright bass, and rhythm guitar on this track accompanied by Brian Hack on lead guitar and Josh Bailey on drums.  ‘Oh! My Soul’ is the sonic embodiment of what people love about Screamin’ Rebel Angels.  This is a crowd favorite from their live set, and it lets you know who Screamin’ Rebel Angels are and where they are from.  Laura Palmer uses a slap bass technique which is one of the more difficult things to do properly on a bass guitar.  Slapping and popping are ways to produce percussive sounds on a stringed instrument.  It is primarily used on the double bass or bass guitar.  Slapping on bass guitar involves using the edge of one’s knuckle, where it is particularly bony, to quickly strike the string against the fretboard.

Screamin’ Rebel Angels are said to be one of the most electrifying acts ever to burst onto NYC’s rock scene, because of their genuine full-throttle rock ‘n’ roll attitude and punkabilly punches which they crank out.  Laura is a woman who is committed to paying her respect to the great rockabilly artists that came before her, but seem to be all but forgotten now.  If you like Screamin Jay Hawkins, or Little Richard, or you are just a fan of great music in general, or if you are totally ready for some fun, then the Screamin’ Rebel Angels are going to be right up your alley.  They play vintage music with savage sounds, marrying old-school rock ‘n’ roll with a modern twist, rocking the audience propelled by the flame haired, tattooed and glamorous singer Laura Palmer, whose mix of angry power and swagger, give you authentic juke joint boogie-woogie ferocious sound.  Laura has a stunningly mesmerizing voice and her marvelous musicianship finds her equally at home slapping the strings of a double-bass while she is playing the life out of her hollow-body Gretsch.  Laura is the kind of front person who only comes along once in a blue moon and is able to sing as good as she plays and because of this, she is able to steer the whole dynamic of the band.  Laura is truly a force to be reckoned with, lifting her bass high above her head and singing originals and covers with abandon.

Ooh! My soul

Baby baby, baby baby, baby
Don’t you know my love is true?
Honey honey, honey honey, honey

Ooh! My soul

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.  There is no need to stick with this song, as you could write about another Screamin’ Rebel Angels’ song, or any other Rockabilly, or Psychobilly song.  You could also write about what a soul means to you, or what a soul man is, or if you ever watched Soul Train, or if you ever ate soul food.  You could write about the Disney Pixar Animation Studios Film Soul, where a New York jazz pianist suddenly finds himself trapped in a strange land between Earth and the afterlife.  If you would like to write about how your soul will stay with you in the afterlife, that would make a nice post.  You could write about your feeling when somebody calls you honey or baby.  If you are a golfer and you would like to write about the Gimmie, which is a short putt that one is excused by an opponent from playing because it is considered too easy to miss, that would be fine.

The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about how redheads are different from others, because they feel more pain.  You could write a post about how many tattoos a person should have before it becomes too much.  Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie brings you a dose of fetish, good friends and an incomparable muse and next Friday on October 8 Dylan Hughes will be here with her First Line Friday.  I will be back on Friday, October 15 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss the song ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around’.  You can either create a ping back to this post, or place your link in the comments section below.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.

The Screamin’ Rebel Angels sell their merchandise through Bandcamp, which is a free online record store and music community where passionate fans connect with and directly support the artists they love. Bandcamp helps musicians post music, earn new fans, and be paid fairly for their work and this site is also great for listeners, as they can find new music and artists outside of the mainstream, and offer them critical support. The Screamin’ Rebel Angels released their first EP, Pounce Like A Tiger, just seven weeks after forming, and they followed this up in 2012 with the release of an independent music video for ‘Right To Wrong’ and single release of the Gino Washington classic, ‘Out Of This World’. They released their first full-length album Hitch Hike which was recorded on New York’s Lower East Side. Fans that have gone to see this band perform live have said that they felt like witnessed the resurrection of rock and roll, stirring within them the raw, primitive passions which first electrified audiences at the genre’s inception.
