So today is my parents’ 43rd anniversary.
Which you probably don’t care about (and that’s quite alright) but it also made me think of my grandparents who were respectively married for 52 years (arguably my dad’s mom was married 66 years but she was a widow for 14) and 63 years.
Obviously my grandparents had their ever after story but what always fascinated me was how they met. My mom’s parents knew each other since they were kids… and my grandpa said she was always the one for him. I never really got them to talk about it. Not before it was too late.
My dad’s parents though… My grandmother never intended to marry; she was considering becoming a nun in fact. But one day she was on a train going from Paris to Lyon, returning from a sewing job. My grandfather sat opposite her, after a week with his family, returning to his military post near Lyon. They talked and he eventually asked her where she lived. She gave him the name of the village, never quite believing she would see him again.
Turns out he was a pilot (really an engineer in aeronautics); and he flew a plane from the military base to the village to go meet her. From these moments in the train – ok at the time it was probably a 6 hour trip vs 1h today – he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with this woman. She was his soul mate.
So for today’s tale I’d like you to consider the concept of “soul mate” – it could be yours or your character’s if you decide to write a fiction: it might be a partner, spouse or a friend.
It can be that person who calls you when you’re thinking of them, or someone you haven’t seen in years but when you meet, it feels like no time has passed at all…
How did you meet? What made you realize they were someone who would become a significant person in your life? Was it love/friendship at first sight? Not? What made things change?
To give you an example, the first words my husband and I exchanged were “You had a chance until you opened your mouth” followed by “You’re a jerk. Do I really have to work with you?” Yep, yep. We’ve been married 11 years. Together for almost 15… So yeah. 🤦🏼♀️😂

Today is a bit of a special day; it’s made me reflect on the concept of ‘soul mate’ and what sort of tale one might come up with from that idea. Partner, friend, family… how did you meet yours?
If you feel like contributing… I’d love to read your take on this.
