Hello, It’s Me You’re Looking For – Challenge #187

Lionel Richie wrote the hit song ‘Hello’ and recorded it for his second solo album Can’t Slow Down in 1983.  The phrase, “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?”, was something that Lionel Richie said to his record producer James Anthony Carmichael when he came by to visit Richie while he was playing piano, to which Carmichael replied, “Finish that song.”  When Lionel Richie was young, he watched beautiful women walk past him, but he was too shy to talk to any of them, and he wondered if any of them were looking for him.  Richie initially felt that the song was corny, but when he finished the verse, he fell in love with it.  Richie had this song written for his first solo album, but he left it off, however his wife Brenda loved it, and insisted he include it on his second album.

The song is one of Lionel Richie’s most successful songs, topping the charts in 9 countries including the UK and US.  His album Can’t Slow Down made him a superstar winning the 1984 Grammy for Album of the Year, and it is the biggest-selling album in the history of Motown Records.  ‘Hello’ reached #1 on three Billboard music charts, those being the pop chart (for two weeks), the R&B chart (for three weeks), and the adult contemporary chart (for six weeks).  It sold over ten million copies and also went to #1 in the UK Singles Chart for six weeks.  Richie was invited to perform at the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, a spectacular stage event that was broadcast worldwide.  Lionel Richie dominated the pop charts during his 1981-1987 heyday where he had an incredible run of 13 consecutive Top Ten hits, and five of them reached #1.  This made him one of the most successful male solo artists of the ‘80s, arguably eclipsed only by Michael Jackson and Prince.

Lionel Richie became a pop and R&B star in the 1970s as lead vocalist for the Commodores.  In 1981, Richie had a #1 pop hit with the Diana Ross, the duet ‘Endless Love’ was featured in the romance movie of the same name, which stared Brooke Shields.  He followed that with his solo debut album the next year and left the Commodores to pursue his solo career.  ‘Endless Love’ became a bigger hit than any of the other singles released by the Commodores.  Marjorie Hoffman White brought a lawsuit against Richie claiming that ‘Hello’ plagiarized her song ‘I’m Not Ready To Go’, after she consulted a musicologist who agreed that Richie used her melody.  She asked for $1 million in the litigation, and wanted the court to prevent Richie from singing ‘Hello’, ban all production of recordings and sheet music and turn over all royalties to her.  I don’t know what happened to this lawsuit, as I couldn’t find any more information on it, and I also searched for her song, but I was not able to find that either.

By 1984, MTV was reaching 1.2 percent of the daily television audience, and more than a quarter of daily teen viewers, so naturally a video was made for this song.  Bob Giraldi directed it and Lionel Richie plays a theater and acting teacher, Mr. Reynolds, who expresses an unrequited love for a blind pottery student, Laura.  Lionel felt this video had no connection to his song, but Giraldi replied. “You’re not creating the story, I am.”  During the video, he sees that she shares the same feeling of love as she made a clay model of his head.  This video was voted the ‘worst music video of all time’ in a poll of 8,000 music fans by UK TV music channel The Box.  I think that the teacher lusting after his student scenario is just creepy.

The song is sung by a lonely guy who dreams about a lady that he doesn’t even know.  He fantasizes about kissing her, as he notices her walking past his door.  He is smitten with this woman and he feels that she is the answer to his cries of loneliness, as he feels that she would know just what to say to him and what to do.  He has no clue how to make this girl love him, but he feels that a good start would be by telling her that he loves her.   The girl never gives him any indication that she feels the same way that he does.  Love works in mysterious ways and despite not actually being acquainted with the girl, he is madly in love with her and he feels that his heart will overflow.  He has formed a mental image of her becoming his lover, although it seems clear to me that she is not looking for him.

I’ve been alone with you inside my mind
And in my dreams I’ve kissed your lips a thousand times
I sometimes see you pass outside my door
Hello, is it me you’re looking for?

I can see it in your eyes
I can see it in your smile
You’re all I’ve ever wanted, and my arms are open wide
‘Cause you know just what to say
And you know just what to do
And I want to tell you so much, I love you

I long to see the sunlight in your hair
And tell you time and time again how much I care
Sometimes I feel my heart will overflow
Hello, I’ve just got to let you know

‘Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely, or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven’t got a clue
But let me start by saying, I love you

Hello, is it me you’re looking for?
‘Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven’t got a clue
But let me start by saying I love you

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.  There is no need to stick with this song, as you could write about another song by Lionel Richie, or any other Motown song.  You could also write about whether or not you think an Endless Love is possible.  You could write about journalist Henry Morton Stanley going to Africa to look for Dr. Livingston.  If you would like to write about a teacher lusting after a student that would make an interesting post.  Since this is a love song, you could write about Beatles saying that they need love, the Black Eyed Peas demanding to know where it is, or why Elvis couldn’t help falling into love, or any song that has something to do with love.

The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about a lawsuit over plagiarism in any song.  If you think that you know how long it would take to kiss someone’s lips a thousand times, I would like you to explain how you derived that.  Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie brings you a dose of fetish, good friends and an incomparable muse and next Friday on July 30 Dylan Hughes will be here with her First Line Friday.  I will be back on Friday, August 6 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss the song ‘Standing on the Moon’.  You can either create a ping back to this post, or place your link in the comments section below.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.

Reblogged this on A Unique Title For Me and commented:

Lionel Richie is a popular singer, songwriter, and producer who is most admired for his smooth and soulful love ballads of the 1970s and ’80s. In 1967, after graduating Joliet East High School in Illinois, he studied economics and accounting at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. While there, he joined a campus band, the Mystics, as a saxophonist, composer, and, occasionally, singer. With some personnel changes in 1968, the Mystics became the funk and rhythm-and-blues group the Commodores, with Richie as a lead vocalist. The Commodores reached the mainstream when Motown asked then to open up for the pop-music sensation the Jackson 5. In 1978, the Commodores had their first Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit with ‘Three Times a Lady’. Richie began to collaborate with other artists like country musician Kenny Rogers, for whom he wrote and produced ‘Lady’ in 1980, and in 1981, he wrote ‘Endless Love’ and sang a duet with pop-soul singer Diana Ross. These musical excursions accelerated Richie’s rapid rise in popularity and ultimately precipitated his split from the Commodores.
