Your Song – Challenge #177

‘Your Song’ was recorded on Elton John’s second studio album Elton John from 1970, although the single did not come out until seven months later.  It was written by Bernie Taupin and Elton and it became Elton’ first hit charting #4 in the UK and it made it to #8 in the US.  This song was written before their famous partnership produced anything, as Elton’s first album Empty Sky was a bit disappointing, and it was his only one that never made the UK charts.  Bernie and Elton met back in 1967 when they both replied to an advertisement in the UK music paper New Musical Express that was looking for songwriters.  Elton was known by his given name of Reg Dwight back then and he was the organist in the band Bluesology that he helped to form in 1962.  He told the A&R man behind the desk Ray Williams that he couldn’t write lyrics, so Williams handed him a random sealed envelope from a pile of lyrics, and it just so happened to contain a batch of poems by Bernie.  On the train home, the pianist opened the envelope and, struck by what he read, he ended up contacting Bernie Taupin.  Originally paired together by simple luck of the draw, they soon discovered their strengths and weaknesses were a perfect match.  Eventually, they both moved into John’s parents’ house, and they continued working together from that time on, becoming pretty much inseparable.  They shared bunkbeds in a tiny room where they poured over new records by Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

In 1966, Bluesology became Long John Baldry’s supporting band, and Reg started going by the name ‘Elton John’ by 1967.  This was a homage to two band members that he was playing with, the saxophonist Elton Dean of Bluesology and the English-Canadian blues singer Long John Baldry.  His name was legally changed to Elton Hercules John on January 7, 1972.  Taupin was a farmer’s son at the time he applied for the songwriting job, still living with his parents when he met Elton and he admits to being a country bumpkin compared to the sophisticated Elton.  They had each written about 20 songs before they ever met and they have always enjoyed writing separately.  As staff songwriters at DJM Records, they spent much of their first two years together writing material for other artists, among them Lulu and Roger Cook.

The lyrics to ‘Your Song’ sound naïve, and that is because Taupin was only 17 when he wrote them, so he had yet to experienced romantic love before, but he could still write beautiful poetry.  He gained experience and wisdom over the years, but this song has past the test of time, because it was real to him, showing exactly what he was feeling when he wrote it.  The inspiration came one morning at John’s mother’s breakfast table, as Taupin jotted lines that would become ‘Your Song’.  The simple, heartfelt, and endearingly innocent lyrics inspired an equally elegant piano composition from John, which he wrote in about a half hour.  The lyrics went perfect with the melody, and it would ultimately become their signature song, as Elton performs this at all his concerts and it is a favorite for weddings.  In 1975, Elton recorded the song ‘We All Fall In Love Sometimes’, which is about the writing of this song.

Elton John played piano, and sang vocals while Frank Clark played acoustic guitar, Colin Green played an additional guitar, Clive Hicks played a twelve-string guitar, Dave Richmond played bass guitar and Barry Morgan played drums on the record ‘Your Song’.  Taupin and John are responsible for more than 35 gold and 25 platinum albums, 30 consecutive U.S. Top 40 hits, have sold more than 255 million records worldwide, and hold the record for the biggest-selling single of all time, ‘Candle In the Wind’, with more than 33 million copies sold.  Taupin and John were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992.

It’s a little bit funny, this feeling inside
I’m not one of those who can easily hide
I don’t have much money but, boy if I did
I’d buy a big house where, we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again no
Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it’s not much but it’s the best I can do

My gift is my song and
And this one’s for you
And you can tell everybody, this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is, while you’re in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked, off the moss
Well a few, of the verses, well they’ve got me quite cross
But the sun’s been quite kind
While I wrote this song
It’s for people like you that oh
Keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting
But these things I do
You see, I’ve forgotten
If they’re green or they’re blue
Anyway the thing is, what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes oh I’ve ever seen

And you can tell everybody that this is your song
It may be quite simple but
Now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.  There is no need to stick with this song, as if you like to write about another Elton John song, then go with that.  You could also go with a wedding song, or any love song.  Maybe you could write a post about not having much money, but wanting to buy a big house for you and your spouse.  If you would like to write about having to live in your parent’s house, because you are not able to support yourself yet, I think that would make a nice story.  The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about your life as a sculptor, or when you made potions in a traveling show.  It would also be good if you could write about a song that mentions the word “song”, or “music”, or “rock and roll”, or “juke box”, or the “radio”.

Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie brings you a dose of fetish, good friends and an incomparable muse and next Friday Dylan Hughes will be here on March 12 with her First Line Friday and she will provide the first line for your post and then you get to write whatever comes afterward, with the length, genre, and structure being completely left up to you.  I will be back on Friday, March 19 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss the song ‘Woodstock’.  When you are finished writing your post, create a ping back to this post, but you can also place your link in the comments section below if you desire.  This Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Music challenge has a special feature called Mr. Linky, which will allow you to instantly link your post after you click the Mr. Linky Button, and permit everyone to read your post sooner that way, and then follow the directions that are given. When you click the Mister Linky widget, another screen will pop up that will look like this screenshot below, with two empty boxes, one for your name and the other containing the web address where your post can be found, both ready for you to fill in.  You must check the box below, for your post to go through.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.

Reblogged this on A Unique Title For Me and commented:

Both Elton John and Bernie Taupin think that ‘Your Song’ may be the best song that they ever wrote. Elton married Renate Blauel on February 14, 1984, but the couple divorced in 1988 and John went on to marry David Furnish, with whom he has two children. Bernie Taupin has been in several serious relationships. He first got married in 1971 to Maxine Feibelman, but things didn’t work out between them and the couple parted ways in 1976. Bernie fell in love with Toni Russo and they got married in 1979. This marriage also did not work for very long and the two got divorced in 1991. Two years later in 1993, Bernie got hitched for a third time to Stephanie Haymes Roven, but they separated in 1998. Bernie married Heather Lynn Hodgins Kidd on March 27, 2004, and the couple has remained together ever since then. They were blessed with two girls, Charley Indiana and Georgey Devon. Bernie won Best Original Song in a Motion Picture for the 2005 movie Brokeback Mountain with the song ‘A Love That Will Never Grow Old’ sung by Emmylou Harris. He won Top Box Office Films for Gnomeo & Juliet a 2011 3D computer-animated fantasy romantic comedy for the song ‘Hello Hello’, which was performed by Elton John and Lady Gaga. Bernie and Elton won Best Original Song in an Animated Film for Sherlock Gnomes in 2018 at Hollywood Music In Media for the song ‘Stronger Than I Ever Was’ which they wrote together. The pair also won Best Music, Adapted Song for Almost Famous a 2000 American comedy-drama film which featured ‘Tiny Dancer’ another song that they wrote.
