Last Christmas – Challenge #172

‘Last Christmas’ was born one day in 1984 when 21-year-old George Michael and Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley were visiting Michael’s parents.  While they were sitting around watching TV, Michael suddenly dashed upstairs to his childhood bedroom and composed the modern Xmas classic in about an hour.  ‘Last Christmas’ reflects the bitterness and vulnerability of a betrayed romantic that just happens to have begun on December 25, when Michael gave someone his heart, and ended on December 26, when this ungrateful person “gave it away.”  There is nothing in this song about Santa, reindeer, trees, snow, or anything that you would typically associate with the holiday.  This song ‘Last Christmas’ stalled at #2, and to this day it has the distinction of being the highest-selling UK single of all time that didn’t reach #1.  This song was beat out by Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’, an all-star charity single benefiting Ethiopian famine relief which Michael sang on.

Wham! were an English pop music duo consisting of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, formed in Bushey in 1981.  The video of this song features the duo’s backing singers Pepsi and Shirlie, as well as a very brief appearance from Spandau Ballet bassist Martin Kemp, the boyfriend and future husband of Shirlie Holliman at a ski resort.  George Michael took complete creative control for ‘Last Christmas’, from synths to sleighbells, he wrote, played, produced and recorded every note of this song.  After George Michael’s unexpected death on Christmas Day 2016 at the age of 53, the song finally made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100, and in December 2018, it reentered the charts and peaked at #25.  George Michael was involved in the 2019 movie Last Christmas, which was a romantic comedy inspired by the song.  Michael stipulated that actress and author Emma Thompson write the movie.  Thompson co-authored the story and the screenplay, and she even wound up playing a supporting role in the film.  Spotify has compiled a list of the biggest Christmas hits for 2020 and the Wham! song ‘Last Christmas’ came in at #2 on the list right behind the Mariah Carey song All I Want for Christmas Is You’ and just ahead of The Christmas Guys song ‘Angels We Have Heard On High’.

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance
But you still catch my eye
Tell me, baby
Do you recognize me?
Well, it’s been a year
It doesn’t surprise me
(Merry Christmas!) I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying, “I love you,” I meant it
Now, I know what a fool I’ve been
But if you kissed me now
I know you’d fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I’m hiding from you, and your soul of ice
My god, I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart
Now, I’ve found a real love you’ll never fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore him apart
Maybe next year I’ll give it to someone
I’ll give it to someone special

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.  There is no need to stick with this song, as if you like to write about another Wham! song, or any other Christmas song, then go with that.  You might also go with a song that is about giving your heart away, or becoming sad because of the way your special someone treated you.  Maybe you could write a post about being in a crowded room, or becoming twice shy after you are bitten, or wrapping something up, or sending an “I love you” message to someone.  If you would like to write about needing a shoulder to cry on, or what it feels like to be torn apart, or letting somebody that hurt you back into your life again, that would also work.  The whole point of this MM Music Challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about how things can change over the time of a year.

Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie brings you a dose of fetish, good friends and an incomparable muse and Dylan Hughes will be here next Friday on January 1 with her First Line Friday and she will provide the first line for your post and then you get to write whatever comes afterward, with the length, genre, and structure being completely left up to you.  I will be back on Friday, January 8 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss the song ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’.  When you are finished writing your post, create a ping back to this post, but you can also place your link in the comments section below if you desire.  This Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Music Challenge has a special feature called Mr. Linky, which will allow you to instantly link your post after you click the Mr. Linky Button, and permit everyone to read your post sooner that way, and then follow the directions that are given.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.

Merry Christmas! This is certainly a Christmas “earworm;” one of those songs that keep cycling and recycling.

Reblogged this on A Unique Title For Me and commented:

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, it’s the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, let’s all have ourselves a Merry Little Christmas, or a Holly Jolly Christmas, or even a Silent Night with some great Christmas music today. There is no need to bring Christmas cookies, although if you did, I would never turn them down, but Please Come Home For Christmas. Don’t be a Scrooge, stuff your stockings with joy and put your humbugs in a sack, as we show goodwill to all men. Let’s all hope that you can keep your two front teeth, that Snoopy doesn’t get shot down by the Red Baron, that the Chipmunks don’t arrive too late and miss out on Christmas and that Granda Ma doesn’t get run over by that same reindeer again. Oh, Come All Ye Faithful and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen as you ring those Jingle Bells and we all hope that Santa Claus is Coming to Town. The Little Drummer Boy will be doing his stuff underneath the Christmas Tree while Mommy is Kissing Santa and it really is Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas. Let’s all be Rocking Around the Christmas Tree with the Angels We Have Heard On High and listen while Hark! the Herald Angles Sing the First Noel. Let It Snow as we Deck the Halls in this Winter Wonderland while we are all Dreaming of a White Christmas and I am sure that Rodolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer will make an appearance with his shiny nose and perhaps Frosty the Snowman will even show up. Christmas can be a holiday that is filled with weirdness, and you never know when the Griswold’s might drop by, but All I Want For Christmas is for you to visit my blog and share some of your favorite music, whether you are naughty or nice.

I like the night theme in your poem Kitty and the owl is very symbolic.
