Mindlovemisery's Menagerie

A dose of fetish. Good friends. An incomparable muse.

Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Neil Young recorded this song in 1970 for his third album After The Gold Rush and it charted #33 in the USA.  Young wrote this song to console Graham Nash, who was heartbroken after breaking up with Joni Mitchell.  Young performed this on the 1970 Déjà Vu tour with Crosby, Stills, & Nash months before it was released.  Joni Mitchell started dating David Crosby around 1967, and he produced her debut album.  Crosby took up with an old girlfriend, Christine Hinton, Joni found out at a party that was given at Peter Tork’s house.  Apparently, Mitchell didn’t like Crosby treating her like a prized, talented possession when he introduced her to his friends and this attributed to their breakup.

In August of 1968, soon after their breakup, Mitchell hooked up with the married Graham Nash, whose marriage was on the rocks then and he was still in the Hollies, but in the process of splitting from them.  They lived together for several years in southern California and the Nash’s CSNY hit ‘Our House’ was written about their home life.  Joni invited Graham to stay at her Laurel Canyon home and this is when he met David Crosby from The Byrds and Stephen Stills from Buffalo Springfield, who had also departed from their rock groups.  Joni Mitchell brought Graham Nash to see her parents in her Canadian hometown of Saskatoon and they talked about marriage briefly, but their relationship eventually ran its course and ended.  Joni broke up with Graham on a telegram that she sent from Greece that said. “If you hold sand too tightly, it will run through your fingers.”

When you were young
and on your own
How did it feel
to be alone?
I was always thinking
of games that I was playing.
Trying to make
the best of my time.

But only love
can break your heart
Try to be sure
right from the start
Yes only love
can break your heart
What if your world
should fall apart?

I have a friend
I’ve never seen
He hides his head
inside a dream
Someone should call him
and see if he can come out.
Try to lose
the down that he’s found.

But only love
can break your heart
Try to be sure
right from the start
Yes only love
can break your heart
What if your world
should fall apart?

I have a friend
I’ve never seen
He hides his head
inside a dream
Yes, only love
can break your heart
Yes, only love
can break your heart

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.  There is no need to stick with this song, as if you like to write about another Neil Young song, or a song by Crosby, Stills and Nash, then go with that.  You might also go with a song that mentions how love can break your heart.  Maybe you could write a post about a song that mentions a game, or a dream.  If you would like to write about being alone, or your world falling apart, that would also work.

The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about falling in love with a friend, or how you make the best use of your time.

Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie brings you a dose of fetish, good friends and an incomparable muse and Dylan Hughes will be here next Friday on October 9 with her First Line Friday and she will provide the first line for your post and then you get to write whatever comes afterward, with the length, genre, and structure being completely left up to you.  I will be back on Friday, October 16 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss the song ‘Gloria’.  When you are finished writing your post, create a ping back to this post, but you can also place your link in the comments section below if you desire.  The MM Music challenge has a special feature called Mr. Linky, which will allow you to instantly link your post after you click the Mr. Linky Button, and permit everyone to read your post sooner that way, and then follow the directions that are given.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.

Reblogged this on A Unique Title For Me and commented:

Neil Young defied categorization and tested unusual forms and sounds. Young underlined his stance as a rock-and-roll shaman, a visionary who projected his psyche onto the world and thereby exorcised his own demons and those of his audience while playing by his own rules his entire life. Young composed the song ‘Sugar Mountain’ on November 12, 1964, which was his 19th birthday. In 1969, Neil Young “Shot her dead” in ‘Down By the River’. On his solo album, After the Gold Rush, which made the Billboard 200 Top 10, Neil has a pleasant dream while he is Looking “at Mother Nature on the run In the Twentieth Century.” In 1971, Young wrote ‘Ohio’ in response to the killing of students by National Guard troops at Kent State University in 1970. In 1972, Neil wrote an ode to the Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten in his song ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’.
Neil gave us ‘Old Man’, ‘Southern Man’, ‘Rockin’ In The Free World’, ‘Cinnamon Girl’, ‘Cowgirl in the Sand’ and ‘Helpless’. Young has received several Grammy and Juno Awards. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him twice: in 1995 as a solo artist and in 1997 as a member of Buffalo Springfield and he was also inducted into Canadian Music Hall of Fame (1982). In 2000, Rolling Stone named Young the 34th greatest rock ‘n roll artist. Young was honored as 2010’s MusiCares Person of the Year and he won Best Rock Song for ‘Angry World’.

I remember this Jim. There are a lot of songs that I associate with specific parts of my life, but surprisingly, this was not one of them, and I got my heart broken oodles of times in my teens.
