I Know You`re Out There Somewhere

New MM Music Badge

This song was written by Justin Hayward and it was recorded on the Moody Blues thirteenth album Sur la Mer which was released in 1988.  The album got to #21 in the UK, and went to #38 in the US.  Flautist and vocalist Ray Thomas did not appear on the album, although he remained a member of the band at the time during which it was recorded.  The hit single ‘I Know You’re Out There Somewhere’ reached #52 in the UK and got to #30 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Justin Hayward received the 1988 Ivor Novello Award for Composer of the Year for writing this song.  Hayward said this song is about trying to find out what happened to your first love.  Hayward wrote 20 of the group’s 27 post-1967 singles and this was their final Top 40 single in the United States.

This song was a sequel to their 1986 single ‘Your Wildest Dreams’ where the protagonist of the earlier song basically decides he’s wasted enough time mooning about that lost love of his and sets out to find her.  The man remembering his first love, wonders if she remembers him the way he remembers her.  Together, the two videos form a warm and fuzzy story celebrating the Sixties which many Baby Boomers were pining for by the ’80s.  It also contains the universal experience of wondering whatever happened to that one who got away.  The man realizes he still loves her, and vows to return again to her.  Like the earlier video ‘Your Wildest Dreams’, this one again features Janet Spencer-Turner as the character from the singer’s past.  Actor Ben Daniels portrays the younger version of Justin Hayward.  Justin Hayward rates this song among the best he’s ever written.  Embracing romantic optimism while reminiscing about an old girlfriend, singer Justin Hayward seems to be fully aware of how very different things had become and also how difficult it would be to ever go back.  This song was used in a Public Service Announcement for missing children.

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.  There is no need to stick with this song, as if you like to write about another Moody Blues song, or a song that is about trying to find an old love.  You might also go with a song that is about knowing that something is going to happen, or about seeing what the future holds.  If you would like to write about a song that is about the secret of someone’s beauty and the mystery in their soul, then go with that.

The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about your memories from a past relationship, or if you think that it is OK to contact an old love interest, or not.  If you want to write about how you hooked up with an old flame, that would also work.

I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.

  1. I love the Moody Blues Jim.I had the chance to see them live in Bristol in the 80s, but couldn’t afford the ticket or accommodation for the trip at the time. Sadly I only have one CD now of Justin Hayward and John Lodge Blue Jays. The last track of side 1 Nights, Winters, Years, is a special song as it was the one playing when my first husband put my engagement ring on my finger.

    Mike Pinder was interested in how music changes people’s moods and since the band was playing blues at the time, they took the name Moody Blues. They released 12 albums between 1968 and 1973 which all charted in the Top 20 and four of them reached #1. The Moody Blues formed in 1964 and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. The classic lineup consisted of songwriter, lead singer, and guitarist Justin Hayward who replaced Denny Laine, keyboard player Mike Pinder who was eventually replaced by Patrick Moraz, bassist John Lodge who replaced Clint Warwick, drummer Graeme Edge, and Ray Thomas who sang vocals, played flute, percussion, and harmonica. Today I have a Moody Blues song from their 1988 album Sur la Mer, come check out this fun writing challenge.

  7. I was about to pick this song. I already had a little written on it last night and changed my mind to Grand Funk…I’ve always liked this song.

    • That would have been something if we both chose the same song to write about today. I only host this challenge every two weeks, so I picked this out two weeks ago. I do the same thing with Song Lyric Sunday and this Sunday I will write about the Willie Dixon song ‘Spoonful’.

      • Hans and I have done it once or twice. When you think about it though look at the odds although we have similar taste it’s still a wide array of songs.
