Just the Two of Us

New MM Music Badge

Bill Withers was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.  This song along with ‘Lean on Me’ which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and ‘Ain’t No Sunshine are some of his best-known songs.  ‘Just the Two of Us’ won a Grammy Award in 1981 for being the best R&B song.  It was written by Bill Withers, William Salter and Ralph MacDonald, and recorded by Grover Washington, Jr. and Bill Withers featuring Withers on lead vocals.  Grover Washington, Jr. wrote song this with his musical partner Bill Salter before Withers added lyrics.  It was produced by Ralph MacDonald, a percussionist who played on many of Washington’s tracks.  MacDonald was friends with Withers and made the connection.  The song appeared on Washington’s album Winelight.  It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the ARC American Radio Chart Weekly Top 40 for a week.

When Withers went in to record his vocals, it was the first time he met Washington.  They were rarely together when they recorded the song, and they never got to know each other very well as Washington died of a heart attack in 1999 at 56.  In the 2009 documentary Still Bill which is about Bill Withers and his life, he states that he wrote this song out of his frustration with the music industry, although most people feel it is about a relationship.

Building castles in the sky is an idiom for having imaginary dreams, high hopes, or grandiose plans that are impossible, unrealistic, or have very little chance of succeeding.  An altered version of this was put forth by St. Augustine when he talked about building on air without foundation.  Henry David Thoreau said, “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be.  Now put the foundations under them.”  Dew is water droplets that are found in the morning, and it is similar to rain, but raindrops even if they are crystal raindrops falling on the window down the hall, don’t become the morning dew.  Tears don’t make flowers grow and they are only a waste of water when nobody cares.

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you sometime
And I wanna spend some time with you
Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I
We look for love, no time for tears
Wasted water’s all that is
And it don’t make no flowers grow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not for those who wait too late
We gotta go for all we know
Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building them castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I
I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew
And darling when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I wanna be the one with you
Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us, just
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building big castles way up high
Just the two of us
You and I
(Just the two of us)
(We can make it, just the two of us)
(Just the two of us)

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.  There is no need to stick with this song, as if you like to write about another Bill Withers, Ralph MacDonald, or Grover Washington, Jr. song, or a song that is about rainbows and the sun shining, that would be great.  You might also go with a song that has flowers, or castles in it.  If you would like to write about a song that relates to two people being in love, then go with that.

The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about tears, struggling to make a better life, good things coming to those who wait, or the beauty of it all.  If you want to write about the window down the hall, that would also work.

Dylan Hughes will be here on next Friday June 19 with her First Line Friday and she always seems to have something in her bag of tricks.  I will be back on Friday, June 26 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss ‘The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write Em)’.  When you are finished writing your post, create a ping back to this post, but you can also place your link in the comments section below if you desire.  This Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie MM Music challenge has a special feature called Mr. Linky, which will allow you to instantly link your post after you click the Mr. Linky Button, and permit everyone to read your post sooner that way, and then follow the directions that are given.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.
