Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood

New MM Music Badge

This song was recorded by the Animals and it came out on their1965 Animal Tracks album.  It reached #3 in the UK and charted #15 in the US.  This single was ranked by Rolling Stone at #322 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.  ‘Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’ was written by Horace Ott, Bennie Benjamin and Sol Marcus. Horace Ott started writing this song while pondering a troublesome time with his girlfriend Gloria Caldwell, as they had just gotten into a heated argument.  Ott sat down at the piano, and he expressed how he was well intentioned, but misunderstood by Gloria, a sentiment that many men can relate to, married or not.  He was unable to finish it, so he took it to his writing partners Bennie Benjamin and Sol Marcus.  The trio finished it in short order, but because they used different publishing companies, Ott couldn’t be credited.  He turned over his writing credit to Caldwell, who later became his wife.  Gloria Caldwell learned to understand him and they stayed together.

Benjamin and Marcus were a songwriting team that had been working together since the ‘40s, and Ott is an arranger.  Nina Simone was the first to record this song, and the song was written expressly for Nina Simone’s 1964 album Broadway-Blues-Ballads.  The album was pitched as lighter fare following her classic Civil Rights-influenced In Concert album earlier that year.  It nicked the US chart at #131.  Bennie Benjamin was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984.  Sol Marcus died in 1976 and Bennie Benjamin died in 1989.

Baby, do you understand me now?
Sometimes I feel a little mad
But don’t you know that no one alive can always be an angel
When things go wrong I feel real bad.

I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

Baby, sometimes I’m so carefree
With a joy that’s hard to hide
And sometimes it seems that, all I have to do is worry
And then you’re bound to see my other side

I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

If I seem edgy, I want you to know,
That I never mean to take it out on you
Life has its problems, and I get my share,
And that’s one thing I never mean to do

Cause I love you,
Oh,

Oh, oh, oh, baby – don’t you know I’m human
I have thoughts like any other one
Sometimes I find myself, Lord, regretting
Some foolish thing, some little simple thing I’ve done

I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood
Yes, I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood
Yes, I’m just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

Yes, I’m just a soul whose intentions are good

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.  There is no need to stick with this song, as if you like to write about another song by the Animals or Nina Simone, or a song that is about being misunderstood, that would work.  You might also go with a song that is about good intentions, or things going wrong.

The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about being human, or about some problems that you are having in your life. If you want to write about being in love, or asking the Lord for help, that would be perfect.

Dylan Hughes will be here on next Friday May 8 with her First Line Friday and everybody should check out this fun prompt challenge.  I will be back on Friday, May 15 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss the song ‘Dear Mr. Fantasy’. When you are finished writing your post, create a ping back to this post, but you can also place your link in the comments section below if you desire.  This Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie MM Music challenge has a special feature called Mr. Linky, which will allow you to instantly link your post after you click the Mr. Linky Button, and permit everyone to read your post sooner that way, and then follow the directions that are given.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.

I was 9 when this came out, and from airplay on the radio I’m familiar with Nina Simone’s version as well as The Animals. I’d lose myself in a lot of the music I grew up with, personal traits, wishful thinking, dreams and the like. It was escapism as I was quite shy and nervous in the company of the opposite sex, but dreams were safe!

It is wonderful when music can bring back old memories.

I have a specific song memory for both grandfathers, my Dad, my Mum, my ex-MIL and a couple of boyfriends. Nothing is actually related as such, just songs that were around at the time or in the case of my family, pieces I played that they enjoyed.

It’s seen me through some very difficult times Jim. I inherited my natural gift from my Dad and he could always tell when something was on my mind by the way I played, not what.

I hope that I am not incorrectly interpreted, please don’t get me wrong. If you get a misconceived notion of what I said, because you were mixed up, I sincerely hope that does not give you the wrong impression or idea about me. Perhaps you are mistaken and you have misjudged me, anyway there is a fun challenge going on today and everyone is welcome to participate.
