New York Minute

New MM Music Badge

This song was on Don Henley’s 1989 album The End Of The Innocence and it charted #5 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary, but it only reached #48 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Don Henley wrote the lyrics to this song, and the music was composed by his guitarist Danny Kortchmar and keyboard player Jai Winding.  Henley later performed this song with the Eagles on their 1994 live reunion album Hell Freezes OverThe End of the Innocence was the third solo studio album by Don Henley, the lead vocalist and drummer for the Eagles and it sold over 6 million copies in the US, peaking at #8 and became a Grammy winner.  Toto member David Paich plays acoustic piano and he wrote and plays the strings arrangement.  Pino Palladino is on bass guitar, Jeff Porcaro plays drums and Steve Madaio has a trumpet solo.  The vocal group Take 6 sang backup on ‘New York Minute’.  They have 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, 2 NAACP Image Awards, a Soul Train Award, and the a cappella group is made up of Claude McKnight, Mark Kibble, Joel Kibble, Dave Thomas, Alvin Chea and Khristian Dentley.

A New York minute is a common expression meaning the blink of an eye, an instant in time, or a jiffy, an extremely short time, characterized by the fast pace lifestyle of New York City.  Johnny Carson once joked that, “It’s the interval between a Manhattan traffic light turning green and the guy behind you honking his horn.”  Life on Manhattan Island is seen as moving by faster than the speed in the rest of the world, so a minute in New York will go by much quicker than a minute anywhere else.  In NYC there are a lot of sirens, some are police sirens, some are emergency service ambulance sirens and others could be from a fire engine.  At any instant, somebody could be going to emergency situation while somebody else will be going to jail.

This song was written after the historic Wall Street crash which happened Oct. 19, 1987 that caused financial ruin for many, along with a spike in suicide rates.  Henley may have looking back at his own life, seeing some of his previous failures, where he did not commit to someone and how this brought him despair.  The song carries a message that you need to appreciate everything that you have, because anything can happen in these crazy times that we live in.  The song gained new life after the 9/11 tragedy.  The guy in the song Harry worked on Wall Street, but things went wrong in his life and he jumped in front of a train to commit suicide.

In comparison, a Hollywood minute goes by much slower, because they have to plan for scenes to be retaken many times and in between you have to redo your hair and makeup so they are perfect, you speak to your agent, you talk to gossip columnists about your plan to be on the red carpet and you practice giving your acceptance speech where you will mention all the people that you love.  You may also discuss where you would like your star to be on the Walk of Fame and any person in Hollywood that you are feuding with at the time, and then call your divorce lawyer.

I had no idea that I would encounter so much trouble locating the Don Henley version of this song, or a video done by the Eagles, but all my efforts were to no avail.  I was able to find this Danny Kortchmar version of ‘New York Minute’ by Don Odells Legends.

Harry got up
Dressed all in black
Went down to the station
And he never came back
They found his clothing
Scattered somewhere down the track
And he won’t be down on Wall Street in the morning
He had a home
The love of a girl
But men get lost sometimes
As years unfurl
One day he crossed some line
And he was too much in this world
But I guess it doesn’t matter anymore
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Things can get pretty strange
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Lying here in the darkness
I hear the sirens wail
Somebody going to emergency
Somebody’s going to jail
You find somebody to love in this world
You better hang on tooth and nail
The wolf is always at the door
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Things can get little strange
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
And in these days
When darkness falls early
And people rush home
To the ones they love
You better take a fool’s advice
And take care of your own
One day they’re here
Next day they’re gone
I pulled my coat over my shoulders
And took a walk down through the park
The leaves were falling around me
The groaning city in the gathering dark
On some solitary rock
A desperate lover left his mark,
Baby, I’ve changed, please come back
What the head makes cloudy
The heart makes very clear
The days were so much brighter
In the time when she was here
I know there’s somebody, somewhere
Make these dark clouds disappear
Until that day, I have to believe
I believe, I believe
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
You can get out of the way
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Things can get little strange
In a New York minute
Everything can change (in a New York minute)
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
You can get out of the way
In a New York minute

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for inspiration in any form of creative expression (including but not limited to short stories, a piece of flash fiction, poems, lyrics, artwork, photography, (etc.) that you can share with the writing community.  Alternatively, if you are a musician, and you have played this song solo or in a group, then post a video to showcase your own work. You could write about how you learned to play the chords or how you learned the lyrics.  There is no need to stick with this song, as if you like to write about another Don Henley, or an Eagles song, or a song that Danny Kortchmar or Jai Winding plays on, that would work.  You might also go with a song that is about a New York City, or one that is about how things can change quickly.

The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate.  This challenge is very loose, so pretty much whatever you come up with will be acceptable.  I try to throw some ideas out there for you and if they seem right, then go with it.  You could write about suicide, or jumping in front of a train.  If you want to write about Wall Street, or losing money on an investment, that would make an interesting story.

Dylan Hughes has next Friday, December 20 with her First Line Friday and then I will be back on Friday, December 27 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss the song ‘For What its Worth’.  When you are finished writing your post, create a ping back to this post, but you can also place your link in the comments section below if you desire.  This Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie MM Music challenge has a special feature called Mr. Linky, which will allow you to instantly link your post after you click the Mr. Linky Button, and then follow the directions that are given.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.

I really don’t think I’ve heard that song before, but it does give me an idea for post.
