Where Do The Children Play

New MM Music Badge

The British folk-rock musician Yusuf Islam better known as Cat Stevens wrote this song for his 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman.  This is an environmental anti-pollution song that blames technological advances for destroying the planet and taking away areas that children are able to play in. Cat Stevens for all intents and purposes ceased to exist after he formally retired from the popular music world in 1978. He changed his name to Yusuf Islam and completely disowned his artistic output as Cat Stevens. The man who was Cat Stevens ran Islamic schools for children, spreading the word of Allah, and acted as a spokesperson for Islam.  After a while, he began making some children’s albums, but he wasn’t playing the guitar anymore.  In 2014, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Stevens has been married to Fawzia Ali for forty years, they have 5 children and they live in London.

Well I think it’s fine, building jumbo planes
Or taking a ride on a cosmic train
Switch on summer from a slot machine
Yes, get what you want to if you want
Cause you can get anything

I know we’ve come a long way
We’re changing day to day
But tell me, where do the children play?

Well you roll on roads over fresh green grass
For your lorry loads pumping petrol gas
And you make them long, and you make them tough
But they just go on and on, and it seems that you can’t get off

Oh, I know we’ve come a long way
We’re changing day to day
But tell me, where do the children play?

Well you’ve cracked the sky, scrapers fill the air
But will you keep on building higher
‘Til there’s no more room up there?
Will you make us laugh, will you make us cry?
Will you tell us when to live, will you tell us when to die?

I know we’ve come a long way
We’re changing day to day
But tell me, where do the children play?

The challenge today is to focus on this song and use it for inspiration in any form of creative expression (including but not limited to short stories, a piece of flash fiction, poems, lyrics, artwork, photography, (etc.) that you can share with the writing community. Alternatively, if you are a musician, and you have played this song solo or in a group, it would be awesome if you could post a video to showcase your own work.  You could write about how you learned to play the chords or how you learned the lyrics.  There is no need to stick with this song, as if you like to write about another Cat Stevens song, or another song about children or the environment, that would work. You could also write about how religion could change your life and turn you into a new person, or about a song that has religious meaning to you.

The whole point of this MM Music challenge is to get you to think, to trigger something so that you can show how creative you are and everyone is welcome to participate. A new virus Eastern Equine Encephalitis is being carried by mosquitoes and that is keeping Michigan children inside, preventing them from playing outdoors till the first frost arrives.  Dulce Maria Alavez was last seen Monday while visiting a Bridgeton, New Jersey, park and she was still missing Thursday morning after disappearing at Bridgeton City Park Monday afternoon. The community have been looking everywhere for her as police search for more surveillance videos that could lead to the girl.  Police think that the 5 year old girl was likely kidnapped.  Princess Diana helped shame the world into banning the use of landmines and cluster bombs.  My good friend Fandango wrote a short article that shows how children are affected after the Sandy Hook school shooting titled We Need To Act…Now!, and the video may bring tears to your eyes.  If you have children and you want to write about them, that would be fine  Should we be doing more to protect them?  There are plenty of topics that you could choose to write about today along these lines, so happy writing.

Dylan Hughes has next Friday, September 27 with her First Line Friday and then I will be back on Friday, October 4 with another MM Music Challenge where we will discuss the song ‘I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight’.  When you are finished writing your post, create a ping back to this post, but you can also place your link in the comments section below if you desire.  This Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie MM Music challenge has a special feature called Mr. Linky, which will allow you to instantly link your post after you click the Mr. Linky Button, and then follow the directions that are given.

About newepicauthor

My About Me section is meant to provide my readers with an honest picture of myself that gives a little bit of background information on who I am and I will wrap this up with a catchy image. I am a story teller and I like to use my imagination. I am interested in many things, but a few of my favorites are watching the NFL and playing golf. I do not like onions and I always make sure that my food does not contain any. I had two wonderful parents, my dad Herb Adams was a television repairman and my mother Mary Adams was mostly a stay at home mom. They are both deceased now and I miss them. I am a retired Electrical Engineer specialized in control systems. I held many different positions because I worked mostly as a consultant. I did work as a Substitute Teacher, for a while, but the kids were awful. I am happiest when I am writing, as this gives my life has a purpose. Forming a sentence with meaningful words that articulate my inner feelings is an everyday quest for me. Every writer needs to tell their story, and all writers have their own style. All stories starts off with characters, who are able to entertain the reader. Creating realistic lovable characters is the best way to tell a story. If you are able to develop characters that become real to you, then you will know exactly what they will do say and do next and this lets your story progress to the completion. Writing changes everything and having the calling to create something new through the power of words is much more than just making marks on a page. Once written, a book can be used by many people to learn and be entertained. The act of writing can be compared to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as it contains an inherent fuzziness, because various people may derive different meanings from reading the same words. You can never know the true nature of written words and the best I can do is hope is that people will understand the meanings that I am trying to convey. There are no clear-cut laws on how to write and it is impossible for me to determine how my readers react to my books.
