Music Challenge #46: “Innuendo” by Queen

As mentioned last time, mandibelle16 is handing over the reins for the Friday Music Challenge. If you think this may be the job for YOU please click HERE for more information.

In the meantime, I will endeavour to keep the prompt going until a new host is found. Please remember, the Music Challenge alternates with Dylan’s First Line Friday.

Cheers, Sarah (aka weejars)

For this week I’ve chosen the song “Innuendo” by one of my all time favourites – Queen. This song has always intrigued me, for the exquisite musical artistry combined with an eerie and harrowing filmclip. At six and a half minutes, it is Queen’s longest ever song, exceeding “Bohemian Rhapsody” by 35 seconds. The song harks back to their progressive rock roots and the song has been described as a “superb epic”, which deals with mankind’s inability to live harmoniously.

Use “Innuendo” as an inspiration for any form of creative expression (including, but not limited to: short stories, poems, lyrics, artwork, and photography).

Alternatively, if you are a musician, use this as an opportunity to showcase your work.

If you need a helping hand to get started, here are a few questions to reflect on…

  • What do the band’s lyrcis inspire in you?
  • Do you feel comforted or hopeful?
  • Do you hate the song or like it?
  • What do you think the song’s message is?

Lyrics: “Innunendo” by Queen

[Intro]
One, two, three, four

[Verse 1]
While the sun hangs in the sky and the desert has sand
While the waves crash in the sea and meet the land
While there’s a wind and the stars and the rainbow
Till the mountains crumble into the plain

[Chorus]
Oh yes, we’ll keep on trying
Tread that fine line
Oh, we’ll keep on trying yeah
Just passing our time

[Verse 2]
While we live according to race, color or creed
While we rule by blind madness and pure greed
Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
Through the eons, and on and on

[Chorus]
Oh yes, we’ll keep on trying
We’ll tread that fine line
Oh, we’ll keep on trying
Till the end of time
Till the end of time

[Bridge]
Through the sorrow, all through our splendor
Don’t take offence at my innuendo

[Spanish Guitar Solo]

[Bridge]
You can be anything you want to be
Just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be
Be free with your tempo, be free, be free
Surrender your ego – be free, be free to yourself

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 3]
If there’s a God or any kind of justice under the sky
If there’s a point, if there’s a reason to live or die
If there’s an answer to the questions we feel bound to ask
Show yourself – destroy our fears – release your mask

[Chorus]
Oh yes, we’ll keep on trying
Hey! Tread that fine line
Yeah, we’ll keep on smiling, yeah
And whatever will be, will be

[Outro]
We’ll just keep on trying
We’ll just keep on trying
Till the end of time
Till the end of time
Till the end of time!

It’s a classic Sarah, and very relevant today.
