Music Challenge #31: “Killing Me Softly” – The Fugees #amwriting #musicchallenge #MLMM

Happy Friday and another week of Music Challenge. There are many versions of “Killing Me Softly,” perhaps a most notable one by Frank Sinatra, but I grew up knowing it through the Fugees. I’ll leave you a couple of videos to listen to this week. I think the diverse versions of the song inspire different perspectives.

(I have to apologize for the odd formatting. My WordPress app updated this week and is now clumping all my writing together in one huge paragraph, unless I separate it with page stops. So, if anyone knows how to fix this I’d be grateful!)

“The Fugees were an American hip hop group who rose to fame in the early 1990’s. Their repertoire included elements of hip hop, soul and Caribbean music, particularly reggae. The members of the group were rapper/singer/producer Wyclef Jean, rapper/singer/producer Lauryn Hill, and rapper/producer Pras Michel. They derived their band name from the word refugee, as Jean and Michel are Haitian, while Hill is African-American. The group recorded two albums—one of which, The Score (1996), was a multi-Platinum and Grammy-winning success and contains their hit single “Killing Me Softly“—before disbanding in 1997.”

Use “Killing Me Softly ”by the Fugees (Frank Sinatra etc.) as a source of inspiration for any form of creative expression (including but not limited to short stories, poems, lyrics, artwork, photography, (etc.). Alternatively, if you are a musician, use this as an opportunity to showcase your own work. What do the lyrics inspire in you? How is love similar to slow, but good death? What are some of the symbolic metaphors used within this song? Why does love always hurt? Why is hurt both good and bad? ***** You can always use pieces of the lyrics to inspire you, as well. Anything goes, within reason.*****

“Killing Me Softly” by the Fugees: *****[LAURYN:] Strumming my pain with his fingers, / Singing my life with his words, / Killing me softly with his song, / Killing me softly with his song, / Telling my whole life with his words, / Killing me softly with his song.*****

[FUGEES:] Hi, yo yea yea. This is wyclef refugeeEl boogie up in here… / Rise well, little / While I’m on this I got my girl L one time! one time! / Hey yo L you know you got the lyrics!*****

[LAURYN:] I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style, / And so I came to see him and listen for a while. / And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes,*****

Strumming my pain with his fingers (one time), / Singing my life with his words (two times),Killing me softly with his song, / Killing me softly with his song, / Telling my whole life with his words,Killing me softly with his song.*****

I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd, / I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud. I prayed that he would finish, but he just kept right on…*****

Strumming my pain with his fingers (one time), / Singing my life with his words (two times), / Killing me softly with his song, / Killing me softly with his song, / Telling my whole life with his words, / Killing me softly with his song*****

[CLEF:]Yo L-Boogie, take it to the bridge*****

[LAURYN:]Strumming my pain with his fingers (yes, he was singing), / Singing my life with his words, / Killing me softly with his song, / Killing me softly with his song, / Telling my whole life with his words, / Killing me softly with his song.*****[Fading:] / Strumming my pain / Singing my life with his words, / Killing me softly with his song, / Killing me softly with his song,*****

Here’s mine. I’m once again recycling a story I previously wrote, in this case about six months ago. I think the theme fits: https://poweredbyrobots.com/2018/01/22/deadly-comfort/

In my experience, I believe no one sang it better than Roberta Flack! 🙂 ❤

She was excellent indeed. I think she wrote the song, no?

No. According to Wikipedia: “Killing Me Softly with His Song” is a song composed by Charles Fox with lyrics by Norman Gimbel. – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_Me_Softly_with_His_Song

Neat. There are many many versions. So, it’s hard to narrow down. I chose not to go into the original history of the song, for length of post too. Enough to talk about the Fugees version, and I did like Sinatra’s, as well. Lauren Hill alone (from the Fugees) also does a nice acoustic version.

Don’t know how I missed this prompt! Roberta Flack’s version echoes in my ears. Thanks for reminding me of a very powerful song in my life back then.

Haha. Yes, a couple of people thought so and I debated posting the video/song, as well. For me, the Fugees version is one of my favorites. I’m such a huge fan of Lauren Hill, but there are many great versions of the song. Thanks for your comment Loraine and if you have time, feel free to contribute to the prompt 🙂
