For this week’s Music Challenge song I have chosen a nineties song, “The Freshmen” by the Verve Pipe. Hope you’ll take listen and respond to this tune 🙂

“The Freshmen” by the Verve Pipe (On David Lettermen)

” In November 1992, the Verve Pipe released their first album, I’ve Suffered a Head Injury. The original 10-song CD is no longer available. A seven-song version, without the original recording of “The Freshmen”, was later released as an EP. The band, known for its energetic live performances, had a strong following during its early years, especially in the college towns of Kalamazoo and East Lansing.

In the fall of 1993, the band released a second album, Pop Smear, which gained them a devoted following in their native state ofMichigan and their eventual signing with RCA Records in 1995. A.J. Dunning replaced Stout on guitar for the recording of Pop Smear and remained in the band for their three RCA records. This album featured the popular tracks “Spoonful of Sugar” and “Victoria”.

Their first major label release was 1996’s Villains, which was a minor hit and launched two respectably selling singles, first “Photograph,’ and then the No. 5 Billboard Hot 100 song “The Freshmen,” which was their only pop hit.

They returned with a new album, The Verve Pipe, in 1999. The album, however, failed to contain the commercial appeal of its predecessor. The band’s 2001 release Underneath contained the song “Colorful,” and was featured on the film Rock Star. Their song “Happiness Is,” was also featured on the soundtrack of the film Joe Somebody.

On September 15, 2009, Brian Vander Ark announced on his website that the band would be releasing a new album called A Family Album in October. The band had been approached to contribute a song for a compilation album called Calling All Kids, which led to them creating an “entire album of family[-]friendly songs”. It was also noted that a new album of rock material would follow.

On March 28, 2014, the band announced FB that their first studio album since 2001, titled Overboard, would be released on June 17, 2014, and would be followed with a tour. The first single from the album, titled “Crash Landing,” was released on April 1, 2014 (Wikipedia.com).”

Use “The Freshmen ”by The Verve Pipe as a source of inspiration for any form of creative expression (including but not limited to short stories, poems, lyrics, artwork, photography, (etc.).

Alternatively, if you are a musician, use this as an opportunity to showcase your own work.

What do the lyrics inspire from your youth or lessons learned growing up? Sometimes the lessons we learn in life and in love must be painful to truly teach us, do you agree with this statement or not? Are there times you wish you’d compromised and you didn’t?

You can always use pieces of the lyrics to inspire you, as well. Anything goes, within reason.

The Freshmen” by The Verve Pipe

*****

When I was young I knew everything

And she, a punk who rarely ever took advice

Now I’m guilt-stricken, sobbin’ with my head on the floor

Stopped a baby’s breath and a shoe full of rice, no

*****

Can’t be held responsible

She was touchin’ her face

I won’t be held responsible

She fell in love in the first place

*****

For the life of me

I can not remember

What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise

For the life of me

I can not believe we’d ever die

For these sins

We were merely freshmen

*****

My best friend took a week’s vacation to forget her

His girl took a week’s worth of valium and slept

And now he’s guilt-stricken, sobbin’

With his head on the floor

Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he said

*****

Can’t be held responsible

She was touchin’ her face

I won’t be held responsible

She fell in love in the first place

*****

For the life of me

I can not remember

What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise

For the life of me

I can not believe we’d ever die

For these sins

We were merely freshmen

*****

We tried to wash our hands of all of this

We’d never talk of our lacking relationships

And how we’re guilt-stricken sobbin’ with our heads on the floor

We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip we’d say

*****

Can’t be held responsible

She was touchin’ her face

I won’t be held responsible

She fell in love in the first place

*****

For the life of me

I can not remember

What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise

For the life of me

I can not believe we’d ever die

For these sins

We were merely freshmen

*****

For the life of me

I can not remember

What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise

For the life of me

I can not believe we’d ever die

For these sins

We were merely freshmen

We were merely freshmen

We were only freshmen
