Music Challenge #23: “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra #musicchallenge #MLMM

Today, I’m feeling like some music a bit quirky and fun. This song by Nancy Sinatra struck me as the perfect fit for this week’s Music Challenge. So, I hope you enjoy it and our glimpse back to popular music in 1966, when the original broadcast of Nancy’s song aired on TV.

“Nancy Sandra Sinatra (born June 8, 1940), is an American singer and actress. She is the elder daughter of Frank Sinatra and Nancy (Barbato) Sinatra.”

“As well, Nancy spent many years in piano, dance and dramatic performance lessons, along with attending voice lessons. In the late 1950’s, Nancy studied music, dancing, and voice at the U of CA. She dropped out after a year, making her professional debut in 1960 on her father’s television special “‘The Frank Sinatra Timex Show: Welcome Home Elvis.'”

“She was signed to her father’s label, Reprise Records, in 1961. Her first single, “Cuff Links and a Tie Clip,” went unnoticed. However, Nancy’s subsequent singles charted overseas. Without a hit in the U.S. by 1965, her singing career received a much needed boost with songwriter/producer/arranger, Lee Hazlewood; Hazlewood became Nancy’s inspiration for music.”

He had her sing in a lower key and wrote songs for her to perform. Nancy was bolstered by an image overhaul—including bleached-blonde hair, frosted lips, heavy eye make-up, and Carnaby Street fashion, making her mark on the American (and the British) music scene in early 1966 with, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin.

The song’s title was inspired by a line in Robert Aldrich’s 1963 western comedy 4 for Texas, starring Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. She also appeared on TV in high boots, with colorfully dressed go-go dancers, a craze during the late ’60’s. Nancy created a popular and enduring image of the Swinging Sixties through her hit song and subsequent music (Wikipedia.com).

*****

You keep saying you’ve got something for me.

something you call love, but confess.

You’ve been messin’ where you shouldn’t have been a messin’

and now someone else is gettin’ all your best.

*****

These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do

one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.

*****

You keep lying, when you oughta be truthin’

and you keep losin’ when you oughta not bet.

You keep samin’ when you oughta be changin’.

Now what’s right is right, but you ain’t been right yet.

*****

These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do

one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.

*****

You keep playin’ where you shouldn’t be playin

and you keep thinkin’ that you’ll never get burnt. Ha!

I just found me a brand new box of matches yeah

and what he know you ain’t had time to learn.

*****

These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do

one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.

  1. Oh my stars and garters. I remember her performing this song on TV when I was a kid. As I recall it was a “one hit wonder”. Let me see what I can do with it.
