Mindlovemisery's Menagerie

A dose of fetish. Good friends. An incomparable muse.

Saturday’s Mix–15 July 2017

Welcome back to Saturday’s Mix.  Today we’re going to explore characterization, the way a character is revealed throughout the story.  As a teen, my sister and I would go to the mall, and when we were sitting on one of the benches, I’d entertain her with the life stories of the people walking past us.  Of course, I was totally making it up.  Still we had fun.  Your writing should focus specifically how we get to know the character: through the narrator directly stating information about the character, through their own words and actions, and through the way other characters react to and interact with the character.

You can share the story of a person you know or a made up character in 250 words or less.  It can be prose or poetry.  For example, here’s Richard Cory by Edward Arlington Robinson.

Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
‘Good-morning,’ and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich – yes, richer than a king –
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

If you struggle to come up with a person or character to write about, you can use one of the images for inspiration.

    This is about the ex-Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram Rajan, He had to quit, on account of differences with the Government over monetary policy, and return to being a Professor of Finance at University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He stood for his beliefs and principles.
