Music Prompt #9: “Liability” by Lorde #amwriting #music #musicchallenge

Welcome to another Friday Music Prompt. Today I’ve chosen a song showing the softer side of the singer Lorde. The song is called “Liability” and I hope you all enjoy it or at least can feel it.

“Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, better known by her stage name Lorde, is a New Zealand singer-songwriter and record producer. “Royals” was “Lorde’s debut single in mid-2013, becoming an “international cross-over hit.” Lorde’s debut studio album Pure Heroine (2013)” had “positive reviews for her depiction of suburban adolescence.”

The following year, Lorde curated the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) and provided its lead single, “Yellow Flicker Beat“. Lorde released her second studio album Melodrama (2017) after a three-year hiatus, launched with “Green Light” as its lead single.” The album “dealt with themes of heartbreak and solitude” (Wikipidia.com). Lorde is only 21-years-old.

“Liability” – Lorde

Use Lorde’s song as inspiration for any form of creative expression (including but not limited to short stories, poems, lyrics, artwork, photography, etc. Alternatively, If you are a musician use this as an opportunity to showcase your own work.

What do you think the point of the song is? Why is the singer a “liability” when her lover is the one who is a “little much” for her?  Have you ever felt the kind of heartbreak the singer experiences? The kind where you can’t have who you want, who you love a great deal?

Let me know!

Baby really hurt me
Crying in the taxi
He don’t wanna know me
Says he made the big mistake of dancing in my storm
Says it was poison
So I guess I’ll go home
Into the arms of the girl that I love
The only love I haven’t screwed up
She’s so hard to please
But she’s a forest fire
I do my best to meet her demands
Play at romance, we slow dance
In the living room, but all that a stranger would see
Is one girl swaying alone
Stroking her cheek

*****

They say, “You’re a little much for me
You’re a liability
You’re a little much for me”
So they pull back, make other plans
I understand, I’m a liability
Get you wild, make you leave
I’m a little much for
E-a-na-na-na, everyone

*****

The truth is I am a toy
That people enjoy
‘Til all of the tricks don’t work anymore
And then they are bored of me
I know that it’s exciting
Running through the night, but
Every perfect summer’s
Eating me alive until you’re gone
Better on my own

*****

They say, “You’re a little much for me
You’re a liability
You’re a little much for me”
So they pull back, make other plans
I understand, I’m a liability
Get you wild, make you leave
I’m a little much for
E-a-na-na-na, everyone

*****
They’re gonna watch me
Disappear into the sun
You’re all gonna watch me
Disappear into the sun
