Music Prompt #8: “Calm Before The Storm” by Sarah Ross #amwriting #musicchallenge #music

Sarah Ross is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter who bridges the gap between genres, mixing country with rap, blues, and rock. She focused on singing in high school and later was a contestant on Season 12 of American Idol, showcasing her cross-genre style by performing a Carrie Underwood song and rapping “Super Bass” for Nicki Minaj. She released her debut EP, Calm Before the Storm, in 2015.  Her songs have also appeared on the Mud Digger compilation series (allmusic.com).  I have chosen her song “Calm Before the Storm for this weeks’ music prompt.

“Calm Before The Storm” by Sarah Ross

I love Sarah Ross, an emerging country singer, who has an amazing new single and album both called “Not Broken.” I searched all over the internet and could not find a video for this song, but it’s on iTunes if you’re interested. Instead I had to choose another of her songs with a video (audio).

“Calm Before The Storm” has a similar vibe to Sarah’s newest single.  If you’ve ever had your heart broken by a lover or a just a friend, there can be a point where you feel such anger and rage towards this person and being betrayed.

At first you might be sad and feeling awful, but then you start thinking, you know, this person was not good for me at all. They were a (insert your favourite swear word) and I put up with that for too long!

Did someone ever make you that angry? So angry you knew all your hurt and rage felt like it was going to burst out of you?

Maybe it ended up in a night with way to many drinks? Maybe there was throwing or smashing of items involved? Perhaps,  you channeled your hurt and there were boxes packed and ready to go on the driveway?
Use Sarah’s song as inspiration for any form of creative expression (including but not limited to short stories, poems, lyrics, artwork, photography, etc. Alternatively, If you are a musician use this as an opportunity to showcase your own work.

“Calm Before The Storm” – Sarah Ross

*****

Love and miss
[Verse 1]
It’s getting eerie quiet
Won’t stay like this for long
Even the crows start flying
They know, they know what’s going on
You could tell by the red sky
There’s something brewing
You had your chance to run and hide
I guess, I guess you blew it
*****
[Pre-Chorus]
The clouds are turning gray
Better pray for your saving grace
It’s just a little too late
*****
[Chorus]
I hope when the lightning strikes
It hits your right between the eyes
And when the rain pours down, better hold your breath
Cause you don’t know what’s coming next
When the thunder screams across the sky
Gonna hear my name in all your lies
Look out boy, you’d better be warned
This is the calm before the storm
*****
[Rap Verse]
You had my heart, you took it and ripped it apart
Now that it’s so dark, you can’t even wish on a star
I hope to God you’re praying too and it’s enough to do his part
Unless a tornado blow through your trailer park
Pardon me if I sound a little too harsh
But your love was my ocean, now you’re stuck in the marsh
[Lyrics from: https:/lyrics.az/sarah-ross/calm-before-the-storm/calm-before-the-storm.html]
On his front porch watching the sun fade
Into the pitch black of yesterday
*****
[Pre-Chorus]
The clouds are turning gray
Better pray for your saving grace
It’s just a little too late
*****
[Chorus]
I hope when the lightning strikes
It hits your right between the eyes
And when the rain pours down, better hold your breath
Cause you don’t know what’s coming next
When the thunder screams across the sky
Gonna hear my name in all your lies
Look out boy, you’d better be warned
This is the calm before the storm
*****
[Bridge]
The sun’s gonna shine, the storm will subside
And I don’t care if you made it out alive
The heart that you hurt will be a lesson you learn
You’ll finally get what you deserve
*****
[Chorus]
I hope when the lightning strikes
It hits your right between the eyes
When the rain pours down, better hold your breath
Cause you don’t know what’s coming next
When the thunder screams across the sky
Gonna hear my name in all your lies
Look out boy, you’d better be warned
This is the calm before the storm
