MAMA NEVER LIKED THE NUMBER 17

My mother did not like the number 17.
She said back in Sicily it stood for bad luck,
that when things went wrong on that date of any month,
they could only get worse. We asked her to explain.
She could not. It was simply the way things were.
October 17th Sharon and I married
Again, this time in church before Father Ed.
I can still imagine Mama’s eyebrows lift up,
a kind of gentle scowl cross her thin lips,
though she said nothing negative about 17.
All those years I never did discover the curse
that 17 carried twelve months through the calendar.
On her hospital deathbed, Mama lay there.
    It was September 17, 2010.
Would she pass away? Was that fear of 17
coming to prove its wrath to us? Mama held on
And died the next morning, on the 18th.

At seventeen, I drew a mustache on my face with Anna’s black mascara. A man at last!
