(Based on a photo by Jean-Daniel Beley)

No way you could track down
    one single human being
who would argue in favor of
    Garrett’s boy. The consensus
still stands: Gabriel was no angel.
Forced to read the Good Book
    he learned about the garden,
how the first man never knew
    the adventures of being
a wild boy, so it was no surprise
when the first woman plucked the apple
and talked him into that first bite.
Gramps called it disobeying the Lord
the way Gabriel defied his maw
and she took the switch to where he sat.
“For plucking one apple?” he thought,
then ran out, driven to outdo Adam.
He was no angel, like I said,
but he looked like one, his arms
    stretched out like branched wings,
    rows of unripe apples hanging
    like ornaments, a smile
transported back in time and place
to Eden. “One apple?” he thought.
    “I brought the tree down!”
