SUMMER BIRDSONG
[Based on the artwork of NEKNEERAJ]
High on the staff lines of Telegraph Hill,
a quarrel of sparrows fly to their places,
instinctually arranging themselves
like musical notes of a summer birdsong.
Lovers holding hands, we pass far below,
oblivious to the rise and fall of their chanting,
attuned only to the humdrum of our hearts
beating love’s affirmation in monotone.
What do the sparrows sing? Praises to Heaven?
Thanksgiving for the safety of high wires?
Meanwhile, barreling down through copper
steel cable, human voices converse.
Sharon and I keep our eyes on the road
where gray shadows of staff lines ripple away.
Finally gazing up to the arrangement above,
we marvel at the sweet song of sparrows.
