BEATEN MAN
“It’s always a woman, ain’t it?” he says,
Claiming again to be a victim in the throes
of despair, a beaten man, brokenhearted,
condemned to the scaffold of his own making.
“Forget her,” they tell him. “Don’t be a lamb
In a hurry to give blood to the wolf.”
But he’s never aware of the barbed fishhooks
of love, only her nectarine cheek,
her willowy walk, that come-on pucker
of a siren’s lips. “Better to live in
seclusion,” they say, “far from the arrows
of outrageous women.” He nods his head.
“Next time,” he says. “Next time will be better.”

I remember watching a movie and in the movie it was the man being abused by his wife but no one took him seriously. The movie was based on a true story. I bet there are a lot more cases like that too but that maybe the men do not come forward or if they come forward they are not taken seriously. I like the perspective of your piece and as always the writing is gorgeous and the words fit in seamlessly

You’ve definitely captured the pain and emotional abuse that can affect people in a relationship, and it’s refreshing that you wrote from the man’s perspective, which you’ve shared with such elegance and grace, that it makes it all the more poignant.
