THEY DON’T SEE THE SILHOUETTE
[Inspired by artwork of Nekneera]
If the walls could confess your whereabouts
somewhere in Bella Italia,
the travel posters hanging there would wage
paper wars, vie for the city of your choice.
I imagine you now on a canal
lip-syncing arias sung by a gondolier
or feeling blessed in a Vatican nave
or walking along the Arno in Florence.
Paulie and Clare ask where is Mommy.
They don’t see the silhouette at table,
dark in your absence, all colors drained,
a painful transformation of flesh and bone
into a one-dimensional memory.
Once you said, if you could, you would dive
into those scenes, land in sunny Italy,
hopscotch the cities and villages.
Wordlessly now you sit at table,
a black cutout of your former self.
Bursting with sorrow,
I watch you from the door.
