Music Prompt #3: “Whiskey in the Jar” sung by Metallica #musicchallenge

For this week’s Music Prompt Challenge, I’ve chosen Metallica’s version of a common Irish drinking song: “Whiskey in the Jar.” “This well-known Irish traditional song, set in the southern mountains of Ireland, often with specific mention of counties Cork and Kerry, as well as Fenit, a village in County Kerry, is a song is about a Rapparee (Highwayman), who is betrayed by his wife or lover. It is one of the most widely performed traditional Irish songs and has been recorded by numerous professional artists since the 1950’s.

The song’s origins come from the traditional folk song “The Highwayman and the Captain” sung in the outskirts of the town of Edinburgh. In 1967, the Irish folk band The Beasley Brothers rewrote the song as ‘Whiskey in a Jar’ and incorporated their own twist to the lyrics and melody.” (Wikipedia).” Metallica’s version of “Whiskey in the Jar” is one of my favourites so I hope you all enjoy!

——

Use this song as inspiration for any form of creative expression (including but not limited too short stories, poems, lyrics, artwork, photography, etc. Alternatively, If you are a musician use this as an opportunity to showcase your own work.

Whiskey In The Jar”
(originally by Thin Lizzy)

——-

As I was goin’ over the Cork and Kerry mountains

I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was countin’

I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier

I said stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya

——-

I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny

I took all of his money yeah and I brought it home to Molly

She swore that she’d love me, no never would she leave me

But the devil take that woman yeah for you know she tricked me easy

——

Musha ring dum a doo dum a da

Whack for my daddy-o

Whack for my daddy-o

There’s whiskey in the jar-o

——

Being drunk and weary I went to Molly’s chamber

Takin’ my money with me, but I never knew the danger

For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell

I jumped up, fired off my pistols and I shot him with both barrels

——-

Musha ring dum a doo dum a da

Whack for my daddy-o

Whack for my daddy-o

There’s whiskey in the jar-o

——

Now some men like the fishin’ and some men like the fowlin’

And some men like ta hear, ta hear the cannon ball a roarin’

Me I like sleepin’, specially in my Molly’s chamber

But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain yeah

——-

Musha ring dum a doo dum a da

Whack for my daddy-o

Whack for my daddy-o

There’s whiskey in the jar-o

——

Whiskey in the jar-o

Musha ring dum a doo dum a da

Musha ring dum a doo dum a da

Hey, musha ring dum a doo dum a da

Musha ring dum a doo dum a da

About mandibelle16

Lovely to meet you: I'm a Canadian girl who loves the local sports scene in her city. The NHL and CFL are my regular sports domains but I've been getting into the NFL games as well. Go Oilers! Excited for our Oilers, Stanley Cup contenders last year and soon to be champions in the following seasons (knock on wood!). Pleased with the Eskimo's winning season so far. Otherwise, I enjoy Hatha yoga, walks in the river valley, drawing with pencil and charcoal, makeup and hairstyles and that whole beauty niche: as well as, taking classes or short seminars on a variety of subjects -- but especially creative writing and art! As well, I love dogs but I can't have one right now and I'm hoping to soon. In the mean time, I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, especially in the summer and fall here when the weathers warm and there are so many festivals and activities to do and places in the city to explore. I am absolutely in love with writing. I'm slowly editing a novel, check me out on Wattpad @mandibelle16. The novel is called 'How Was Last Night?' by A.M. Wilson and is a paranormal romance. I haven't had much time to work on it lately doing some other small projects. On my blog I take part in flash fiction challenges, short stories, poetry, and some nonfiction pieces. Nonfiction writing includes blogger/writer interviews, current events, quotes, entertainment, fashion, beauty, and relationships. Sometimes I share a bit about my life. Check out some of my published poetry and short fiction on www.spillwords.com, Silver Bell Press Online, and SickLitMagazine.com., and herheartpoetry.con on Instagram. Interesting prompt. I added two versions by less than traditional Irish balladeers.

I’d say that the Jerry Carcia version is lots more traditional Irish than most of the others, my tastes run to the more traditional folk. Thanks for including it.

        My comment disappeared!
I was suggesting YouTubing is like Googling and Binging, never know what you might find. In this case, looking for the Thin Lizzy version, I came across a Dead rehearsal where Whiskey is remembered, then the wonderfully acoustic version by Garcia and Grisman.
Familiar with the Irish Balladeer versions; nice to find some slightly different ones, especially the Garcia — a surprising find.

Weird, I’m not sure why it disappeared. I’ll take a look for sure at some of those other YouTube etc videos. I guess I just grew up with the Metallica version so that is what I chose 🙂
