    MADNESS AS MASQUERADE

The man insists the world, not he, is mad.
Propped up in bed, decked out in the gown of
institution green, he sings in Bedlam
the songs of lost youth, scrambling the lyrics
so instead of praising love he quarrels
away the lonely hours with enemies
    visible and invisible: the price
he pays for allowing the fruits of life
to lose their sheen, grow rotten in the bowl.
He defines his madness as masquerade,
walking the narrow to protect what’s left of him.

I can see this as a common occurrence years ago when one knew not what to do with the differently abled who flirted with sanity. But is today really much better?

Yours is a concise piece. As is my flash fiction 😉
