Friday Music Prompt #2: “Jolene” – Dolly Parton and Pentatonix #musicchallenge

Welcome to another week of Friday Music Prompt!

For this week I’ve chosen a song, “Jolene,” originally written and performed by the legendary Dolly Parton but redone by the a capella group Pentatonix. “Jolene” was originally released in October 1973 as the first single and title track from Parton’s album of the same name. The song was ranked No. 217 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” in 2004 and Dolly Parton says “Jolene” is the song most-recorded by other artists, of all the songs she has ever written. If you care to look on YouTube, Miley Cyrus also does an amazing version of the song.

“Jolene” was also nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the original release of Parton’s song and in the following year for the live version. Despite the song not winning either nomination,  it eventually earned Parton her Grammy Award 44 years after its original release for a cover by the a capella group Pentatonix in which Parton was also featured.

Have you ever had someone else steal or seduce away someone you loved or thought you loved?

Use this song as inspiration for any form of creative expression (including but not limited too short stories, poems, lyrics, artwork, photography, etc. Alternatively, If you are a musician use this as an opportunity to showcase your own work.

“Jolene” – Dolly Parton and Pentatonix

Lyrics: “Jolene” by Dolly Parton

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene

I’m begging of you please don’t take my man

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene

Please don’t take him just because you can

———

Your beauty is beyond compare

With flaming locks of auburn hair

With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green

——-

Your smile is like a breath of spring

Your voice is soft like summer rain

And I cannot compete with you, Jolene

——–

He talks about you in his sleep

There’s nothing I can do to keep

From crying when he calls your name, Jolene

——-

And I can easily understand

How you could easily take my man

But you don’t know what he means to me, Jolene

——-

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene

I’m begging of you please don’t take my man

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene

Please don’t take him just because you can

———

You could have your choice of men

But I could never love again

He’s the only one for me, Jolene

———

I had to have this talk with you

My happiness depends on you

And whatever you decide to do, Jolene

——–

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene

I’m begging of you please don’t take my man

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene

Please don’t take him even though you can

——

Jolene, Jolene

About mandibelle16

Hey, nice to meet you. I'm a Canadian girl who loves the local sports scene. The NHL and CFL are my regular sports domains but I've been getting into the NFL games. Go Oilers! Excited for our Stanley Cup contenders last year. Their soon to be champions in the following seasons (knock on wood!). Pleased with the Eskimo's winning, they're in a slump but there's time. My dream of the moment is to see the Oilers play the new Las Vegas team! I also enjoy Hatha yoga, short walks in the river valley, drawing with pencil and charcoal, makeup and hairstyles, the whole beauty niche: as well, short seminars, TED Talks, and podcasts on a variety of subjects -- but especially creative writing, art, and humorous lifestyle. I love dogs but I can't have one right now but I enjoy hanging out with friends and family whenever I'm able. I like summer and fall when the weathers warm and there are many festivals. Lots of activities to do and places in the city to explore. I'm a writing fanatic. I'm slowly editing a novel, check me out on Wattpad @mandibelle16. The novel is called 'How Was Last Night?' by A.M. Wilson and is a paranormal romance. I haven't had much time to work on it in months but hopefully in Fall? On my blog I take part in flash fiction challenges, short stories, poetry, and nonfiction pieces. Nonfiction writing includes blogger/writer interviews, current events, quotes, entertainment, fashion, interior design, and beauty. Sometimes I share about my life. Check out my published poetry and short fiction on www.spillwords.com, Silver Bell Press Online, SickLitMagazine.com., and herheartpoetry.com on Instagram. Happy to meet you, browse as long as you like! If you have any questions or suggestions you can get ahold of me through my blog Contact Page up too! There is a mr. linky problem — think it will be relatively easy to solve. Did you put the linky widget in the text, not visual, tab of your post? Otherwise, try again. Not a problem as some folks only link through pingbacks and comments.

Okay, mr. linky worked second time — so perhaps you inserted in the visual tab? No biggie — just see code rather than image. Perhaps it’s just my computer — gremlin-coloured glasses abound.

Should I try in the a visual? Would that work as opposed to just putting it in the post itself from the Mr.Linky website?

When you have composed your post and put it in the mlmm editor, switch from the visual tab where you don’t see any code, to the text tab where you do.
Insert the Mr. Linky code where you want it in your post. Switch back to visual, and the Mr. Linky click “button” should appear. Look at your post in preview — you should see the Mr. Linky image and be able to click through to the “blenza.” Then schedule as usual.
Your post also showed up on Thursday before midnight — again, no big deal. The scheduler is set on European time, so adjustments have to be made. I live on the east coast of North America, so to have my posts publish at midnight, I schedule it for 5:00 am on the date it is due. So, for Tale Weavers, it would be 5:00 am on Thursday. You are an hour (?) behind Eastern Standard Time, so you could schedule your prompts for 6 am on Friday (I think that’s right) and it would post at midnight or after.
PS: If you follow hockey — congrats on the OT victory last night.

Thanks, yes I was trying to figure out UTC +1 time but I knew it wasn’t quite right. Thanks again.

        Also thanks about the Oilers!

      Hi Lorraine,

I have no idea what to do with Mr. Linky, after I copy and past the HTML text in my post. From what I read on the Mr. Linky site, the picture should just show up but it isn’t and I don’t know how to make it do that?

Let me know if you know how. Thanks. Also thank you for your piece, I will read it soon 🙂

I replied to this in another comment, but will try and be more succinct. I cut and paste the text of my post into the mlmm editor while in the visual tab. I switch to the text tab, insert the Mr. Linky code, then switch back to the visual tab. The Mr. Linky image should appear. To check to see if it’s a valid link, view the post in preview mode, click on Mr. Linky “button” and you should go through to the blenza screen.
You seem to know how to generate the code for a Mr. Linky. If you aren’t sure, let me know.

A PS to the reply below — the linky code that appears has a “tail” outside of the usual code string. That might be the problem, and some ” look flipped. I’ll check a linky code of mine in the scheduler and send you, via email, a sample of how the code I generate (then copy and paste) looks for comparison. Hope this all helps. I still have problems with Mr. Linky — he doesn’t like me at all.

Hi Sal. Thank you so much for participating. I would love to read your piece but I don’t seem to be able to read it through the link you provided. I don’t have access. Thank you anyways. Also, the Mr. Linky buttonnow works 🙂
