Poem

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

–Jellaludin Rumi

What is the underlying theme? What’s the story here? The overarching emotions? If you like you can read them like panels in a comic strip it’s up to you how your interpret them. Literal or abstract are both perfectly acceptable.

If you have some great quote suggestions leave them in the comments below and I will use them in a future collage! Alternately if you are a photographer and would like to share some of your photos for the purpose of the collages let me know. If you are interested in making a collage for the prompt, let me know in the comments below.

Thanks Laura and what a gorgeous and elegant job you did. Excellent use of both collage and quote and even the style of your writing works perfectly

  10. This is a quote I’ve been meaning to suggest for one of your collages from one of my favourite artists:
“Only those who attempt the absurd will achieve the impossible. I think it’s in my basement… let me go upstairs and check.” M.C. Escher
