Writing Prompt: May 8 2016: The Tarot – Major Arcana – The Hanged Man

Welcome to this week’s Sunday writing prompt, featuring, in order, the next selection in the Tarot, The Hanged Man.

At first glance, this card can seem disturbing, yet further exploration and understanding reveals a far greater significance than what we perceive. In fact, this card really isn’t about death in a literal sense. Interestingly enough, this particular card is highly spiritual and about enlightenment and understanding, and growth.

General associations for this card:

However, in order to better appreciate the meaning and symbolism of this card, one needs to really study beyond a basic definition of the above-mentioned words.

This card can be read, often, as pointing to a moment of decision, choice, – a crossroads in some sense – where the choices presented, are not exactly clear or obvious. This card is about paradox.

The universal exploration of this card is about recognizing that some times the most obvious thoughts, ideas, courses of action are precisely NOT the best ones, regarding a circumstance or situation. Truth and enlightenment can be found, discovered or realized ONLY through surrender – a spiritual awakening in realization, which can offer release, and knowledge.

This card often signals that it is necessary to release ingrained, conditioned patterns of thought, behavior and actions – by choosing to surrender, in recognition, that the opposite is where the truth lies. In short – The Hanged Man is about letting go of control – controlling ideas, behaviors, attitudes that affect not only ourselves, but also how it is we interact in exchanges with others. This card reminds us that we impose and therefore restrict by continuing to engage in the same cycles and patterns.

For a deeper exploration of this card and the symbolism of a more traditional image, please search out your own sources, or begin here:

So for this week? How do you choose to interpret and explore this fabulous card? At what level are you willing to dive (Neptune is associated with this card) into the waters and explore the ideas, concepts, mentioned above? Is your approach straightforward, rippling on the surface? Or do you slice through the darkness and emerge refreshed and transformed?

Ideas to consider: Literally, the world here is your oyster – as this card can refer to any aspect of life, its trials and tribulations, problems and concerns, patterns and cycles.

So – quick summation: it’s about control and release, surrender and sacrifice of old patterns of thought and conditioning, which yields a deeper, broader, understanding and perspective, and choice.

Now, off you go – write, explore, create, share – however you wish, on whatever topic – which in some way, relates and explores the meanings of The Hanged Man. Create your scenes, worlds, scenarios, characters, and/or relate a personal story of challenge and change etc.

You have a week to participate. Please share your responses by linking back here at MLMM – create a pingback – and link up to the official linky thing. Remember to tag your posts MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie, Writing Prompt and Tarot Card: The Hanged Man.

    Hanging in…

Nice to know that The Hanged Man isn’t always negative.

indeed – it can be rather the opposite …. and it also depends on the draw, placement, upside down or right-side up etc. but …. much like anything …. it’s about perspective 🙂

      thanks for the link up

I let hubby golf and put off grocery shopping. Time well spent at the key board. Interesting how we can allow the ‘draw’ to or see the influences in our lives in the cards that are place before us. The card reminded me of ‘cirque du soleil’ – Hard work to balance like that, hanging. 🙂

Funny thing about actually doing this whole Tarot thing is actually getting the chance to learn the cards and have the time to think on them, without it being in a reading, which can make it all the more overwhelming or complicated to understand. At least I’m finding it fascinating the more I walk along with it 🙂
