Music Prompt #32 ” “Riverside” by Agnes Obel

Hello everyone!

HUGE thank you goes out to Yves for covering me last week. You are a lifesaver 🙂

After you drop off your screaming creation here, stop by A Dash of Sunny for more  opportunities to share your poems!

It seems like Spring may be upon those in the Northern Hemisphere. Anyone have a Farmer’s Almanac? lol As the outside temperature rises, water will beckon many to its shores. Some to sunbathe, swim and float leaving stress somewhere upstream.

Water has always held danger and magic for me. I never learned to swim properly, but the breathless rush calls to me like a Siren. Last summer, I lay on the beach waiting for the current. As it twirled and pulled at my body, I thought of my fear of losing control. It took strength to leave the water embrace and crawl onto the hot sand. I haven’t been in a church in years, but felt Him in that moment.

Down by the river by the boats
Where everybody goes to be alone
Where you won’t see any rising sun
Down to the river we will runWhen by the water we drink to the dregs
Look at the stones on the river bed
I can tell from your eyes
You’ve never been by the riverside

Down by the water the riverbed
Somebody calls you somebody says
Swim with the current and float away
Down by the river everyday

Oh my God I see how everything is torn in the river deep
And I don’t know why I go the way
Down by the riverside

When that old river runs pass your eyes
To wash off the dirt on the riverside
Go to the water so very near
The river will be your eyes and ears

I walk to the borders on my own
To fall in the water just like a stone
Chilled to the marrow in them bones
Why do I go here all alone

Oh my God I see how everything is torn in the river deep
And I don’t know why I go the way
Down by the riverside

Oh oh, hey hey [x3]

Down by the riverside [x2]

Here’s a scene from a short story I’ll be publishing next month to benefit Autism Awareness. It’s called Blossomed. It’s a story about a woman who has been reborn to intervene in the life of a man with a traumatic brain-injury. This scene takes place towards the end of the story…

Charlotte faded in and out of consciousness. She heard Maggie and Louis arguing in hushed voices. She heard Justin’s frantic pleas for help. The voices were warbled, like they would be under water, and her limbs felt as though they were floating. Any other time it would have been peaceful, like the time she went to Bucks Lake with her family when she was in middle school. She’d floated out in the middle of the lake for so long, her father had had to swim out to make sure she was okay.
“Sorry, Daddy,” she’d said. “It’s just so peaceful out here.”
“You can’t stay out here forever,” he’d warned. “You’ll get too tired and not be able to swim back. Now come on, your mother’s worried.”
She swam back with him, sad to leave her special place. Water had always given her peace, until she was too sick to swim. Then it was baths. She always preferred them to showers because the pounding of the spray hurt her sensitive skin.
She just needed to float for a while, and then she’d be as good as new…
Except this time, the longer she floated, the more pain she felt in her body and her head. It felt way different than it had when she’d been reborn.
Justin! She couldn’t leave him now. Didn’t ever want to leave him. She…

Thanks for such a great prompt. The water certainly calls to me!
