Heeding Haiku With Chèvrefeuille October 28 th 2015 Halloween

Halloween
Halloween

Dear friends of MLMM,

Welcome at a new episode of Heeding Haiku With … last week we had a nice challenge to write a haibun (prose and poetry in one) and this week I have another challenge for you. As you all will know next weekend it is Halloween. It is a holiday which is not that known here in The Netherlands, but in several other countries (e.g. the USA) it is one of the greatest holidays in a year.

This week I love to challenge you all to write a haiku inspired on Halloween, but … I love to challenge you to create a Tan Renga from your haiku. What is a Tan Renga? It looks very similar with a tanka, but you have to write it with two poets, that of course is not possible. So what is the challenge than? Well … you have to write a second stanza of two lines towards your haiku with approximately 7 syllables per line. Your second stanza you create by associating on the images/scenes in your haiku.

I will give an example:

in the chapel
the sound of whispering voices
All Souls Day

I will (try to) write a second stanza by associating on “whispering voices” and than it will become this:

my ancestors’ spirits cry
“don’t forget us, don’t forget us”

© Chèvrefeuille

I will bring both stanzas to each other:

in the chapel
the sound of whispering voices
All Souls Day
my ancestors’ spirits cry
“don’t forget us, don’t forget us”

© Chèvrefeuille

This is what you call a Tan Renga, a short chained poem, but written by one poet. That is the challenge … try to write a haiku on Halloween and reform it into a Tan Renga.

When you have written your haibun,  please TAG Heeding Haiku with Chèvrefeuille and Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie. Then add your link to the Mister Linky widget below:

  1. I did find a bunch of Halloween haiku, but I didn’t want to use any without permission. And It is not really a holiday I celebrate anymore. So I think I will pass on this challenge.
