Music Prompt #1 “Saint Lawrence River”

Welcome to the Music Prompt! Music is a wonderful source of inspiration for me personally so I am extremely pleased to announce this new addition to Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie. I thought the best way to start us off was to start with one of my favorite artists and favorite songs.

Smells on the air
See there it’s crushing the final impression
The stains on the paper
Where words fell like water
Unearth all the changes that never did matter
I think it’s beginning to freeze here

Caught in the rage and the fire of things
All the brightness that burns me

I am shocked by the colour the glorious weight of your skin
Comes alive

Could we escape all the bitterness piled upon bitterness
Held in the face of the things that I don’t understand
Intellectualize over and over
This helplessness suits us
Funny how quiet has slipped to our corners
Worn all our edges away
You are watching breathing and baiting
Wanting and warming and cautiously waiting
For some simple signal to creep cross your conscience
Uncover redemption and oh did I mention
I carried you down to the St. Lawrence River
The banks running dirty the water’s beginning to freeze here
Solid by morning
And I’ll freeze here
Winter by morning

Comes a lie
And I never thought you’d get me back so soon
Might be nice
But it’s only if my own destroyer
Comes alive
And I always knew I’d make it up to you

I saw on your face such a curious grin
As I let go your hand
I was desperate to hold you again
But you’re sinking so deep in the water
Outsmarted myself and so easily gave up what I wanted
Solid by morning
What I wanted
Winter by morning

But I always knew you’re my destroyer

  4. Thank you for introducing me to David Usher. And, the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec acts as a metaphor and a powerful image.
    I think Friday Music Challenge is a great idea.
    And like Michael, I look forward to adding a fairy tale whimsicalness to Tale Weaver.

  7. Such a richness and depth, a boldness to the lyrics – it leaves me breathless and amazed in the possibilities available to those who write lyrics – and then add music to them – or a combination thereof etc.

    I admit to insisting on having my own radio – at the age of 2 – and I did – music – of all types, genres etc. is important to me. Not only the musical score itself, but lyrics – and I wonder why it is I can remember songs from before my birth and yet, can’t figure out where I put the damn milk!?!

    Great intro to the prompt – which is a new and intriguing idea. Love it. 😀

    • Thank you so much! I am so glad you liked it! As a child music was my way of escaping trauma/healing. I was always singing (terribly I admit) and everyday I could not wait to plug in the microphone (which considering that no one in my house could sing must have been a torture device) and practice. I practiced sometimes for 8 hours strait! and I still sing like a dying semi-robotic coyote lol Music was everything and I also had to have my radio. As I am from the 80s music played in the streets 24/7 so I never had to go without it. It is a shame I never had a talent for it, I can’t even write songs so I have to live vicariously through geniuses like David Usher. When I discovered poetry though that was a good day!

      • LOL — not laughing at you – but rather I understand – Music is a huge part of my life – even studied piano for some years – technically, I have no problem with it – and I have a great “musical ear” – but I can’t sing a lick – it’s like I’m tone deaf – which I know, makes no sense – because honestly – I have a musical ear – but alas, I must have stepped out of the line when the vocal parts were being handed out 😉

        But that doesn’t stop me – when no one is around – from singing away.

        I’ve always wondered – especially now – more and more – why it is that I have this ability to really get music – the different layers to it – and yet – I can’t sing. Oh well – such as it is.

        And so we discover other abilities and talents – in different ways.

        It was a great day – emphasis on great – when you discovered poetry and writing 😀

      • I have always wanted to study a musical instrument. I remember in music class we got to sample some more unusual instruments and I picked the xylophone and after my mock performance the teacher asked me after class how many years have you been playing that? Are you in the band? That was the first time I ever touched one so that remains my one musical success story that freak accident lol I often wondered why my love and intense practice made so little difference as well. I still sing, actually I sing better if I sing without music just by myself, don’t get wrong it’s not good but then I can sing in the way that works a little better with extremely bizarre singing voice and well I can hear. I don’t have good hearing so I can’t pick sounds well

      • So you are a musical prodigy without even knowing it XD

        I think it comes from the soul – whether we’re “good’ at it – well – okay – no auditioning for me here – but it’s about enjoyment – so yeah, do what works out right for you. Besides, what’s the expression “dance as if no one is watching” … well … “sing as if you’re naked and no one is watching” XD
