Heeding Haiku With HA: Social Issues

The haiku, in general, pertains to the spiritual connection of a being with the nature. But that very being is a part of society as well and thus is entitled to be involved with its norms and developments and the resultant issues that rise up. Social issues emerge as a result of discord in an element of a society or another, and these have to be dealt with by each one of us in our own ways.

Some social issues which have been persisting since long are related to gender and race, which often lead to crimes against women and people of different skin colors. I recently saw a short French movie(with english subtitles of course) which depicts a world in which the gender roles have been reversed. I am hereby embedding the YouTube video of the movie:

It is hard to imagine to involve social issues such as those mentioned above, while writing a haiku or tanka. But we will try doing so. All you have to do is choose a social issue close to your heart, pick an element, and write about it in the form of a haiku or tanka.

You can even pick a social issue which has a relationship with the nature and environment like water scarcity, pollution, global warming, etc. A tanka would be more appropriate in case of sarcasm and social commentary though.

What to do next?

1. Publish a post with your haiku or tanka if you have a blog. If you haven’t got a blog, you can share them in the comments down below. In case you have published a post, you can submit its link in the linking widget.

2. After you have made the post, take some of your time and visit the links of other participants. This is how we learn and improvise. Return again at the end of the week if you have made your post during the weekdays because there would be new links to visit, which would help us all to make connections and develop the feeling of community and togetherness in our adventure every week. Even if you can’t take out the time to visit all the links, then visit at least the link shared before or after you and offer your feedback and develop comradeship with that person.

I hope this posts as this prompt isn’t technically up yet – but it was in my mailbox. I was awake so here it is…Most often we would like to put the news behind us. But being informed and educated does make us better people. Or so I would hope.

I grew up in the 1960’s in NYC where it was more OK to be ‘who’ you were. I read a while ago that Aides may have started a long time before it was recognized as such. We need to keep fighting for the rights of all people everywhere. Tyranny just isn’t nice anywhere. And stoning isn’t the answer.
